The SHEQ Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality standards across the company’s operations, with a particular focus on utilities and infrastructure projects under ICP and NERS frameworks.
This role involves overseeing the implementation and maintenance of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems, coordinating site audits across England with occasional travel to Scotland, and managing accreditation platforms such as Achilles, CHAS, and others.
The SHEQ Manager plays a pivotal role in promoting a positive SHEQ culture, advising senior leaders, mentoring operational teams, and maintaining a strong compliance and continuous improvement ethos throughout the organisation

Key Responsibilities:
Site & Project Compliance
* Conduct regular and unannounced site audits across England and Scotland to ensure adherence SHEQ standards.
* Assess and monitor operational compliance during all phases of the project lifecycle, identifying non-conformances and recommending corrective actions.
Standards & Accreditations
* Maintain and continually improve the company’s Integrated Management System in line with ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environmental), and ISO 45001 (Health & Safety).
* Manage and ensure ongoing compliance with NERS and ICP standards, including participation in internal and external audits.
* Oversee and maintain supplier and contractor accreditations via platforms such as Achilles, CHAS, and other pre-qualification schemes.
Advice, Guidance & Leadership
* Provide up-to-date expert guidance on legal and regulatory SHEQ requirements across the business.
* Advise management teams on SHEQ strategy, performance, and risk management, recommending suitable interventions or improvements.
* Foster a culture of continuous improvement by mentoring, coaching, and training staff at all levels.
* Lead investigations into all incidents, near misses, and non-conformities, producing clear reports with root cause analysis and action plans.
* Support operational teams in the development and review of risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work.
* Evaluate occupational health risks (e.g. noise, vibration, dust, COSHH), supporting the preparation of Section 61 applications and compliance with local authority requirements.
Performance Reporting & Communication
* Prepare and present SHEQ performance reports (KPIs, trends, improvements) to senior leadership and stakeholders.
* Develop and deliver training materials and communications, including inductions, toolbox talks, and awareness campaigns on SHEQ topics.
Stakeholder & Contractor Engagement
* Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, regulatory authorities, and internal stakeholders.
* Represent the company in community liaison and traffic coordination meetings, as well as during audits and regulatory inspections.
* NERS Competency Management
* Act as NERS Assessing Officer where required, assessing competency and issuing NERS Passports to employees and subcontractors.
Qualifications:
* NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent NVQ Level 3, with a minimum of 3 years' experience in a similar role.
* NEBOSH Diploma (or working towards) with at least 1 year of post-certification experience.
* Strong working knowledge of the electricity distribution industry, including CDM Regulations, environmental protection, NRSWA, and occupational health risk controls.
* Proven experience with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and managing compliance with NERS and ICP standards.
* Familiarity with online accreditation management systems (e.g., Achilles, CHAS etc).
* Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office and SHEQ management software platforms.
* Strong stakeholder engagement skills and a collaborative approach to working with clients and internal teams.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* UK Drivers Licence
