Oureye department offers general and sub-specialist services to our populationincluding sub-specialist surgery in oculoplastics, surgical retina, and cornea.The successful applicant will join a team of 3 consultants, an AssociateSpecialist, 2 orthoptists, 2 Clinical Nurse Specialists and several furthermembers of nursing and support staff. We benefit from a world-class standard ofequipment, both in clinic and theatre. The successful Cataract Fellow will start with us in August 2024 and will have 3 timetabled theatre lists each week with a consultant, with no other trainees present in theatre. (A previous post-holder here achieved 150 complete phacoemulsification cases in 18 months, starting as a beginner.)
Main duties of the job
Surgical progress will naturally be dependent on ability, skillset and previous experience. The experience gained during this role may of course count towards future CESR application or promotion into the new Specialist grade. The remaining timetable will be in eye clinic, delivering general ophthalmology outpatient work including glaucoma, medical retina, eye casualty, laser sessions, and intravitreal lists. The successful candidate is likely to have at least 2 years' experience in general ophthalmology and be comfortable with slit-lamp usage, laser capsulotomy, intravitreal injections and interpretation of basic diagnostics including OCT scans.
Full travelling expenses are paid from a UK port of entry, and the appointee may be able to take advantage of Jersey taxation policies. Under Jersey Law, applicants must possess FULL registration with the General Medical Council and hold a licence to practise. The Medical Staff currently comprises threeConsultant Ophthalmic Surgeons, Mr A Shah (Medical & Surgical Retina) Mr G Bowler(Oculoplastics, Adnexal & Lacrimal) and Mr A Spiteri (Cornea & OcularSurface); and a Cataract Fellow (this post). The department has its own nursingteam headed by a full time Sister supported by four Staff Nurses, of which all areophthalmic trained, and 6 Health Care Assistants. Two senior orthoptists areresponsible for orthoptic services on the Island, which includes a school-entryscreening programme as well as, uniquely, screening of all stroke in-patientsfor visual problems. Low Vision and paediatric refraction clinics are providedin-house by visiting optometrists. A visiting anaplastologist, providescomprehensive support for ocular prosthetic services Outpatient Department has appropriateclerical and administrative doctors in the department have MedicalSecretarial Support for typing of dictated letters and other admin support.

Essential
1. Clinical Experience in an NHS environment in the UK
2. Basic computer skills including use of MS office programmes and e-mail
3. Basic legal requirements for consent and note taking.
4. At least 2 years in General Ophthalmology
Desirable
5. Enthusiastic Teacher
6. Previous Management Responsibility / Leadership Experience
7. Willingness to develop or utilise surgical skills
8. Ability to examine children including cycloplegic refraction
9. Significant experience with minor operations (chalazia, ectropion etc)
10. Competence with Yag & argon Laser treatments

11. Primary Medical Degree
12. Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a Licence to practise (for overseas candidates it is mandatory that a licence is obtained prior to appointment).
Desirable
13. MRCOphth, FRCOphth, or equivalent post-graduate ophthalmology qualification
14. Basic Life Support (BLS)
