Consultant Clinical Scientist (Radiotherapy)

Job overview

The Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) has created a new 8B role to act as the Lead for Clinical Developments and Deputy Head of Treatment Planning. The successful candidate will be based primarily at Freeman Hospital but will also work occasionally at Carlisle.


Main duties of the job

You will support the head of treatment planning by providing scientific expertise, managing clinical and scientific teams, and driving development of the clinical planning service to ensure a high quality service. Operational management responsibility for planning service aspects and assurance of dose modelling quality will be yours. You will line‑manage clinical scientists, advise and mentor technologists, and oversee commissioning, QA, and the introduction of new systems, including automated, AI and adaptive planning solutions. Proven leadership and change‑management experience is essential.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Provide scientific and technical leadership in external beam planning and ensure resilience in the planning service.
* Manage and lead planning service activities across Newcastle and Carlisle sites, and oversee commissioning of new and updated systems.
* Lead major strategic innovations to maintain national and international quality standards.
* Collaborate with senior clinical oncologists to develop and update clinical protocols.
* Take a leading role in clinical trials, ensuring QC and MPE input, and contribute to trial design.
* Lead on radiation incidents with planning elements, investigate, and implement lessons.
* Design and deliver training and coaching for MSc, STP, FRCR and in‑house professional development.
* Develop and monitor strategies, procedures and practices to maintain quality external beam planning.
* Deliver research activities across specialist areas and supervise scientific and technical staff.
* Line‑manage clinical scientists and mentor the technologist team.
* Advise on the update, expansion and introduction of planning‑related software and training.


Person specification


Qualifications & Education

* Honours degree in an appropriate physical science, minimum Second Class.
* Post‑graduate PhD level, or Masters with equivalent specialist knowledge.
* Registered Clinical Scientist (HCPC).
* Recognised by the Secretary of State as a Medical Physics Expert.


Knowledge & Experience

* In‑depth knowledge of application of physical and engineering sciences in medicine, at doctoral level or equivalent.
* Understanding of current legislation, regulations and safety standards relevant to the role.
* Knowledge of Clinical Governance issues, ethical and regulatory considerations.
* Extensive and up‑to‑date knowledge of radiation physics in radiotherapy.
* In‑depth knowledge of a wide range of radiotherapy physics practices.
* Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
* Specialist knowledge in more than one area of radiotherapy physics relevant to the role.
* Experience of research and development and leading service development projects.
* Experience of leading major clinical development projects.
* Involvement in multidisciplinary projects.
* Experience in equipment and process QA, advanced treatment planning, and imaging in radiotherapy development.
* Experience preparing grant applications.
* Good publication record in peer review journals and research.


Skills & Abilities

* Communicating complex and sensitive information to patients and colleagues.
* Solving complex problems.
* Good IT skills for scientific analysis and data presentation.
* Good report writing and presentation skills, including scientific papers and conference presentations.
* Teaching, training and mentoring skills.
* Giving scientific technical advice to colleagues and clinicians.
* Initiating research and development and leading teams within teams in R&D.
* Undertaking complex calculations, data analysis, and issuing quantitative reports.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration. The postholder will have access to vulnerable people and is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment), Order 2020, and will be required to submit a DBS disclosure.
