Purpose of the Job
1. Develop and lead a team of up to 6 design engineers to create the designs for company products
2. Work closely with the R&D and analysis teams to realise proposed electromagnetic concepts into mechanical machines
3. Oversee the creation of 3D parts and 2D detail drawings to the highest standard for EV powertrain components and associated assembly tooling
4. Perform hand calculations and simple 3D structural analysis
5. Work with a high level of autonomy, managing own day to day work load
6. Support project planning activities including effort estimation and scheduling
7. Create supporting documentation to support the effective handover of designs from prototype to mass production, including leadership of suitable virtual build events
Main duties to be carried out
1. Creation of 3D parts and assemblies using CAD system
2. Design of key elements, jigs & fixtures, process refinement
3. Undertake engineering calculations, design verifications and design analysis.
4. Perform Design For Manufacture studies
5. Perform Design For Assembly studies
6. Support and lead where necessary cross function DFMEA reviews at component level
7. Creation of 2D drawing to company and external standards
8. BOM creation and maintenance
9. Generate concepts and identify solutions to meet design specifications
10. Take ownership of tasks from initial concept through to production
11. Support first off prototype build events
12. Attend project review meetings and deliver on key milestones
13. Demonstrate a keen desire to learn and develop your skills and engineering knowledge
14. Perform day to day team leadership tasks such as performance review, skills matrix development, training plans etc.
Qualifications and Experience required
1. Degree in mechanical or automotive engineering OR mechanical design experience within a precision engineering environment.
2. Proficient with the use of 3D CAD - SolidWorks preferred
3. Experience working with PDM system – eg Solid works Manage
Skills and Capabilities required
1. A good understanding of drawing standards, tolerances, limits and fits, GD&T.
2. A broad knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods would be an advantage.
3. Experience of mechanical FEA analysis tools and simulation packages
