Overview
Our electrical engineers collaborate closely with mechanical, public‑health, lighting, façade and other specialists to deliver complete building services solutions. Using advanced BIM techniques we embed electrical design into the early design process and enable our teams to share intelligent virtual prototypes.
Electrical Engineering at Buro Happold
Electrical engineering spans the entire building lifecycle – from concept and environmental strategy through construction, operation and beyond. Digital buildings grow in prominence; we use data to improve and transform how we interact with the built environment.
A graduate will be embedded in design teams, working on projects that are innovative, sustainable and socially beneficial. Projects include energy efficiency upgrades, automation, and high‑profile sports venues.
Sample Projects
* British Library at Boston Spa, UK – Renovation of a 1970s collection store with a focus on energy efficiency and staff wellbeing, including automated storage.
* Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, UK – New stadium design featuring a retractable pitch and regenerative impact on Haringey.
* Fry Building, University of Bristol, UK – Modernisation of a historic building, improving accessibility and MEP strategy.
Qualifications
* Graduated or studying in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a similar degree with an emphasis on building system design and sustainability.
* Interest in the built environment and preferably internship experience at an engineering firm.
Desirable Experience
* Passion for electrical engineering, building design and decarbonisation of electricity supply.
* Academic or research experience with alternative energy systems.
* Familiarity with BIM software such as Revit.
What Will I Do?
* Collaborate with design teams to deliver impactful buildings for high‑profile clients.
* Embrace and explore new technologies to improve building performance and sustainability.
* Work with sustainability consultants to enhance mental health, wellbeing, and productivity through innovative electrical design.
* Design core electrical systems – lighting, low‑voltage power distribution, communications infrastructure.
* Contribute to systems such as fire detection, CCTV, access control, and IT.
* Support vertical transportation implementation by conducting lift traffic analysis with dynamic simulation software.
* Assist decarbonisation efforts by designing power distribution networks for low‑carbon technologies, including PV, electric heat pumps and EV charging.
* Collaborate with internal specialists (lighting, sustainability, physics, structural, civil) and external professionals (architects, landscape architects, sector specialists, interior designers).
* Explore computational workflows and experiment with cutting‑edge tools and visual programming.
* Deliver high‑standard electrical designs and supporting documentation (reports, calculations, BIM models, specifications, schedules, presentations).
