Your learning experience

This course is for learners who would like to work with children in a school setting, working with children and young people aged 5-19 years, as a teaching assistant or learning support assistant.

On this 1 year course, you will develop your skill set, exploring the roles and responsibilities and possible career progression routes. You will develop the core skills required for working in a school or college setting.

You are required to have a disclosure and barring service check (DBS); this allows you to access the work experience that is required to develop your skills within a school setting.

As part of the course you will be required to attend a mandatory placement, one day a week, working within a school or college, year 1 or above. A dedicated placement assessor will support you while you gain hands-on work based industry skills; this allows you to gain a real life insight into the sector.

Alongside the course, you will also attend visits and trips to support and enhance your classroom delivery.

Subject teachers have industry experience which is shared with learners. This provides a stimulating learning environment and promotes positive learning. The course will also help develop those all-important employability skills that will help you decide on your career path.

Entry Qualifications

Learners should have 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above or equivalent, such as Level 1 Teaching Assistant qualifications.

You will be interviewed by the subject teachers and should be enthusiastic about working with children and young people. You have the opportunity to re-sit your English and maths alongside your Supporting Teaching and Learning course (If you do not already have grade 4).

How is this course assessed?

You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods including discussions, role play, case studies, presentations and written work. All work is assessed internally by the subject teachers with the course being graded as pass/fail. Throughout the year, learners will be observed in placement by a qualified assessor. This will be conducted to assure each learner is competent in working within a school or college setting.
