Clinical Scientist (Audiology)

An opportunityhas arisen for a Clinical Scientist to join our enthusiastic and future-focussedteam.
Clinically, thefocus of this role will be supporting the vestibular diagnostic andrehabilitation service and the tinnitus and sound sensitivity service. The postholder will work within a multidisciplinary team to provide high-qualitypatient care.
You must beable to demonstrate proficient team working, as well as a high standard ofclinical and communication skills. You will need to develop good workingrelationships and liaise effectively with a wide range of clinicians, patientsand families.
As well asapplications from HCPC registered Clinical Scientists, we also welcomeapplications from trainee Clinical Scientists in their final year of the STP(Scientist Training Programme) in Audiology, who are keen to develop theirexpertise in these clinical specialisms. The service is an accredited STPtraining department and support would be provided to complete any outstandingclinical aspects and proceed to IACC examination. The applicant would be paidas a Trainee Clinical Scientist (Band 6) until the final examination was passedand HCPC registration was obtained. The applicant would then be expected tomeet all essential criteria of the Band 7 role. It is expected that thistransition from Trainee Band 6 to qualified Band 7 would be completed within 12months of the applicants start date.
Main duties of the job
South Tynesideand Sunderland Audiology Service provides a district level adult rehabilitationservice and a sub-regional level service (including Tier 3 paediatricassessment & rehabilitation and diagnostic audiology).
There are 30 staffin the department, including 23 Healthcare Scientists, up to 2 Trainee ClinicalScientists/Audiologists, 1 Audiology Assistant and 4 Admin & ClericalSupport.
There will also be opportunities to contribute to research initiatives and lead service development in the routine adult service, particularly supporting IQIPS accreditation.
Keyresponsibilities of the role include:
* Leadingvestibular diagnostic clinics and contributing to the departments DM01position.
* Performingtinnitus therapy and vestibular rehabilitation, delivering tailored managementplans.
* Leadingdevelopment and service improvement initiatives in the routine adult audiologystream.
* Engagingin research, training and quality improvement initiatives.

Job responsibilities

* Work autonomously to provide specialised assessmentand rehabilitation within the Adult Audiology service.
* Contribute scientific expertise and specialistadvice to consultant medical staff and other professional staff related to AdultAudiology.
* Assist the Adult Audiology Service Manager and TeamLeader in ensuring the training, competency and supervision of more juniorcolleagues and trainees.
* Carry out audits in Adult Audiology, includingidentifying, initiating and managing certain aspects.
* Workwith the Adult Audiology Service Manager andHead of Service to ensure that clinical and professional standards aremaintained at all times.
Person Specification
Experience
* Significant experience within the field of Adult Audiology.
* Skill and experience in communicating with patients and their relatives who may be distressed, including the ability to explain technical procedures in simple terms.
Qualifications
* MSc in Clinical Audiology or equivalent.
* Completion of the Scientist Training Programme in Audiology.
* Proven track record of appropriate CPD through an accredited CPD scheme such as the BAA.
* Registration with the RCCP/AHCS/HCPC as appropriate.
* Management or leadership qualification or equivalent.
Physical Skills
* Ability to travel between hospital sites, as required.
* Moving and Handling skills with adults and children.
* Ability to conduct audiological measurements of all types related to the job role.
Skills and Knowledge
* Specialist knowledge of hearing, balance and tinnitus assessment and management for adults.
* In-depth and up-to-date knowledge of developments in the field of Adult Audiology (including international developments).
* Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology relevant to Audiology Audiology.
* Counselling skills.
* Good report writing and presentation skills the post holder must produce clear and concise reports.
* IT literate with understanding of Audiology Patient Management System.
* Ability to work effectively without direct supervision.
* Proven track record of appropriate CPD through an accredited CPD scheme such as the BAA.
