Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled Civil Power Engineer to support the design, coordination, and delivery of civil engineering works for electrical infrastructure projects, including substations.
This role involves producing civil and structural designs for concrete and steel structures under the guidance of a Senior Engineer, while ensuring coordination across multiple disciplines to deliver compliant, safe, and cost-effective solutions.
Key Responsibilities Design & Technical Delivery
* Develop civil and structural designs for:
o Substation foundations and equipment bases
o Control buildings
o Cable trenches
o Access roads and drainage systems
o Retaining walls, bunds, and compounds
* Produce detailed drawings, calculations, specifications, and construction details
* Ensure designs comply with relevant standards (BS/EN/Eurocodes, DNO/TSO specifications, CDM regulations, and utility standards)
* Collaborate with electrical and mechanical teams to integrate civil design elements
* Interpret geotechnical, topographical, and environmental data to inform design decisions
Project & Site Coordination
* Provide technical support during construction, including:
o Responding to RFIs
o Conducting site inspections
o Issuing design clarifications
* Review contractor method statements, temporary works, and construction proposals
* Support planning applications, environmental assessments, and permitting activities
Stakeholder Collaboration
* Coordinate with internal teams, external consultants, clients, and contractors
* Participate in design reviews, hazard studies (HAZID/HAZCON), and multidisciplinary meetings
* Prepare technical reports, design justifications, and documentation packages
Health, Safety & Compliance
* Ensure all designs meet CDM requirements and promote safe construction practices
* Conduct design risk assessments and incorporate mitigation measures
* Maintain compliance with industry regulations, utility specifications, and environmental standards
Skills & Competencies
* Strong knowledge of civil and structural engineering principles
* Experience within substation or power infrastructure projects (LV/HV/EHV)
* Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, STAAD, Tekla, or similar
* Ability to interpret survey data, geotechnical reports, and utility drawings
* Excellent communication and technical report writing skills
* Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail
Qualifications & Experience
* Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (BEng/MEng)
* Chartered status or working toward chartership (CEng / IEng) with ICE or IStructE (desirable)
* Experience in power, utilities, renewables, or heavy infrastructure sectors
* Familiarity with DNO/TSO standards (e.g., National Grid, SSE, UKPN, SPEN, ENW) preferred
* Experience with site work, design coordination, and construction support
