As a Security Officer at MI5, you will protect our people, places and assets and enable our operations. Working alongside a close‑knit team of colleagues, you will provide a professional service that ensures the safety of our organisation. The majority of this role is about anticipating, preparing for and preventing security risks. You will receive full training to equip you with the knowledge and confidence to respond to any situation.
Responsibilities
* Operate within the Security Control Room, overseeing access to the building, conducting physical searches and monitoring CCTV to identify potential risks.
* Serve as the first point of contact for visitors, providing a reassuring and friendly welcome to people from across government or partner agencies.
* Respond to alarms, administer first aid and advise visitors on our security processes, ensuring security policies are adhered to.
* Maintain accurate written logs of incidents and report them appropriately.
* Work as part of a team and provide help and support to colleagues.
* Remain in the security team for five years, during which time you may apply for promotion or pursue other roles within the Security Officer Team, subject to readiness and endorsement from your line manager.
* Participate in key security projects and initial and ongoing training programmes.
* Be potentially re‑assigned to another site within the London area at short notice.
Qualifications
* Maths and English language GCSEs at grade C/4 or above.
* Basic IT and Microsoft Office skills.
* Ability to commute to your location for your assigned shift time.
* Motivated and proactive with situational awareness, confident reacting to changing situations, and able to communicate clearly and work with others.
* British citizenship or dual British nationality.
* Highest security clearance – Developed Vetting (DV).

Training & Development
You will receive dedicated training under the mentorship of experienced professionals. This training includes operational procedures, security systems, customer care, conflict management/resolution, fire safety, emergency first aid, and CCTV operation. An initial 3‑week training period follows by continued skill development, with the total training cycle usually taking one year to complete. You will be assigned a mentor and an induction guide to support you day‑to‑day.
Working Hours & Location
Day shifts are 9 hours, 5 days per week (Monday‑Friday) starting between 06:00 am and 10:00 am. Due to the nature of the role, flexible or remote working is not possible. The role is based in London and you may be reassigned to another site within the London area at short notice.
