Job Description
The salary for this role is £91,173 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.
This role is based at Culham, Oxfordshire
This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.
The Role
Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Head of DICE and Plasma Commercial, you will be a member of the senior leadership team of the Plasma Science and Fusion Operations Directorate, playing a pivotal role:
To manage the strategic direction and operations of the UKAEA Diagnostic Centre of Excellence (DICE) facility to meet the current and future programmes of the Directorate and UKAEA. You will be responsible for overseeing the preparation, execution and reporting of the work of the DICE team, including R&D work, commercial contracts, and collaborations. You will manage and monitor the assigned budget for DICE and assist the Executive Director in setting it.
To manage the Plasma Commercial function, seeking out new business and commercial opportunities for the Directorate and establishing and managing, as project sponsor, complex commercial arrangements of the value of several £M for the delivery of components, technical consultancy, and support.
To identify business growth areas, manage bids and commercial contracts with external customers and suppliers. Different funding methods will need to be enabled - from 100% commercial bids, through match funding, and to grant applications and partnerships. The growth areas shall include commercial opportunities to expand the work of the Directorate to Fusion adjacent areas to support UK academia and industry.
Qualifications
* Education to PhD or equivalent in a physics or engineering related discipline.
* Demonstrable experience and broad understanding of fusion work across a wide range of disciplines, particularly fusion diagnostics, data acquisition and control; proved experience and deep understanding of working within the international fusion programme.
* Experience of having a leading role in tendering for, securing, managing, and delivering commercial contracts of size 1 M£ or above.
* Project Management knowledge including leading successful large scale (1 M£ or above) projects.
* Ability to manage, coordinate, motivate and supervise the work of scientists, engineers, and PhD students.
* Ability to communicate thoughts clearly and concisely in both written and verbal forms, including to large audiences.
* Ability to command the respect of and influence a wide range of internal colleagues and external scientific collaborators is essential, including at Director level.
* Knowledge of safety, environmental and quality issues relating to fusion research is highly desirable.
