Overview
Azenta Life Sciences has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a dedicated team of engineers, contributing to project-specific design and product configuration work in response to a strong increase in customer contracts. This includes assembly & detail component design, generation of BOMs and design substantiation (e.g. calculations etc) and working with cross-functional teams to meet customer requirements & timescales.
Responsibilities
* Undertakes design of assemblies, sub-assemblies and components using SolidWorks 3D CAD systems.
* Ensures designs are robust by using techniques such as FMEA / design review / DFM & DFS.
* Drive repeatability and standardisation into custom stores projects by utilising equipment and sub-systems that are already developed and proven.
* Translates requirements for sub-systems into design solutions (based specifications from customer / lead engineer or line manager).
* Works with the design team to identify, analyse and resolve project difficulties before they arise.
* Cooperates closely with other functions in the Hardware design team including Electrical Design, Refrigeration, Systems Engineering.
* Applies a ‘standard operations’ approach to the design process (e.g. calculation templates) and works with team lead to reinforce & further develop company practices.
* Expected to keep up to date on technical advances in the discipline and related fields.
Qualifications
* Degree or HNC in Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related discipline.
* Proven expertise in mechanical design, particularly in automation systems including motors, gearboxes, bearings, and systems requiring positional accuracy.
* Strong ability to create detailed component designs, including dimensioning, tolerancing, and performing tolerance stack-up calculations.
* Skilled in designing complex assemblies, generating assembly drawings, and producing comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOMs).
* Direct experience in generating and documenting design calculations.
* Proficient in SolidWorks 3D CAD.
* Experience with PLM systems (Agile PLM preferred), including document routing and approval processes for drawings, CAD models, and calculations.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office tools and MS Teams, including video conferencing.
* Effective team player with strong communication skills.
* Able to clearly convey design intent and contribute to the evaluation and resolution of design challenges.
* Collaborates closely with Operations and Test teams during product build and testing phases.
* Understands a range of manufacturing methods and incorporates manufacturability into designs.
* Capable of thoroughly documenting design work.
