Trust Fellow in Congenital Heart Surgery (ST3+ Equivalent)

The closing date is 06 April 2026

This post is to commence June 2026 for 12 months.

Main duties of the job

To provide support to the congenital cardiothoracic surgery team.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

To support the consultant firms on wards, in theatre, in out-patient clinics and at MDTs.

To take responsibility for admission examination, daily review of patients, handover, arrangement of necessary examinations and communication with consultant staff.

To take part in the teaching and training of junior staff.

There will be opportunities for training in all aspects of congenital Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Administrative:

Responsible for keeping in-patient records.

Research:

To Be involved in clinical research

Teaching:

To be involved in weekly teaching session

Flexibility:

In line with the Trusts core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend. As a result any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.

Person Specification


Education and Qualifications

* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCS or equivalent
* Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months
* FRCS or equivalent


Clinical Skills and Knowledge

* Two years' experience in congenital cardiac surgery
* Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague
* Good history & examination skills
* Able to formulate a working diagnosis
* Able to order appropriate investigations.
* Image interpretation relevant to practice
* Evidence of senior operative experience in congenital Cardiothoracic Surgery


Maintaining Clinical Competence

* Evidence of CME
* Written evidence of satisfactory training to date: workplace assessments


Teaching

* Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors
* Willingness to develop new approaches to teaching and learning


Clinical Governance, Audit and Research

* Understanding of research principles
* Experience in audit projects


Communication, Relationships and Working with Colleagues

* Fluent and clear communication in English
* Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and other people within a team
* Ability to work as a team with professional colleagues in all disciplines
* Good member of the multi-disciplinary team
