About the Role
We’re recruiting a Behaviour Support Assistant for a specialized provision in Sunderland. Your main aim will be to provide practical, hands-on support to students who require assistance regulating their behaviour, managing emotional challenges, and accessing learning effectively. This role suits someone proactive, patient, and skilled at building trust with young people.
Key Responsibilities
1. Deliver 1:1 or small group support for behaviour regulation and emotional self-management
2. Implement behaviour plans and strategies as developed by teachers and SEN teams
3. Assist with transitions, movement breaks, calming spaces and other as needed behaviour support tools
4. Help maintain a structured, consistent, safe learning environment
5. Work closely with SENCO, teaching staff, and external professionals (therapeutic / counselling) to monitor progress
Person Specification
6. Prior experience supporting children/young people with behavioural challenges, SEND or SEMH settings
7. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to remain calm under pressure
8. Positive, patient, empathetic attitude and willingness to learn and adapt
9. Good observational skills and ability to provide thoughtful feedback
10. DBS clearance or ability to obtain
