Laboratory Attendant 1
Location: PHO Peterborough Laboratory, 99 Hospital Drive, Peterborough, ON

The Role:

To provide laboratory attendant services in support of laboratory operations.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Receive pre-packaged samples and transport them to appropriate laboratory areas.
2. Receive, open, and distribute mail and faxes.
3. Pick up bio-hazardous waste and package it for disposal according to safety standards.
4. Complete logs and records as required (e.g., eyewash, spill kit, bench cleaning).
5. Open, sort, and rack specimens upon receipt.
6. Wash glassware, including loading, operating, and unloading equipment.
7. Prepare clean glassware for sterilization, e.g., capping tubes.
8. Sort and restock clean glassware and other laboratory inventory (e.g., gloves, labels).
9. Operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment (e.g., dishwashers, material lift, Biological Safety Cabinets).
10. Complete logs for temperature monitoring and alert supervisor/delegate when out of range.
11. Prepare solutions (e.g., bench top cleaner - 70% ethanol or bleach products).
12. Deliver/receive laboratory supplies from supply chain.
13. Record lot numbers of incoming supplies electronically or in log books.
14. Review and record inventory numbers and alert supervisor/delegate when reordering is needed.
15. Package materials/samples for delivery to onsite and regional laboratories.
16. Archive samples in designated areas.
17. Print barcode labels, check specimen bags, and ensure all samples are accounted for.
18. Maintain filing systems, including requisitions and records.
19. Assist with data entry and scanning of requisitions into LIS and other software.
20. Train and orient new team members as assigned.
21. Perform other duties or projects as assigned.


Knowledge and Skills:

* Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory safety procedures.
* Knowledge of computer systems, laboratory information systems, MS Office (Word, Excel).
* Proficient in computer skills for automated equipment.
* Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and equipment operation.
* Familiarity with WHMIS standards.
* Good communication skills, both oral and written.


Education and Experience:

* High school diploma.


Attributes and Competencies:

* Ability to lift up to 10 kg regularly.
* Ability to perform repetitive tasks and stand for extended periods.
* Physical activity including walking, lifting, stretching, bending.
* Work within a laboratory environment with hazardous materials, odors, noise, and temperature extremes.
* Work shifts as assigned.
* Follow established procedures and SOPs.
* Recognize potential hazards and seek guidance as needed.

Duration: Contract (Fixed Term), 4 months
Hours of Work: Part time, 18.13 hours per week
Compensation Group: Ontario Public Service Employees Union
Salary: $25.21 - $26.58
