Specialist Biomedical Scientist

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals with specialist experience in haematology and blood transfusion for a full‑time Band 6 post at our modern and well‑equipped Haematology/Blood Transfusion Laboratory at Royal Preston Hospital.
Please note to be recruited straight to Band 6, applicants must be an HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientist with a specialist portfolio in Haematology/Blood Transfusion. Proof of qualifications must be provided prior to short‑listing/interview.
Main duties of the job
The Haematology and Blood Transfusion department is based at Royal Preston Hospital, a Major Trauma Centre serving Preston, South Ribble and Chorley. The site offers specialist plastic, neurology, renal and oncology services along with routine services.
The major equipment includes Sysmex XN and CS 5100 series analysers, TOSOH G11 for Haemoglobinopathy screening, and Diamed IH1000 analysers for transfusion automation. Haemobank fridges enable remote electronic issue of blood units. You will be expected to perform routine and specialist procedures.
You will be based at Royal Preston Hospital but also required to work across the sites at both Royal Preston and Chorley hospitals. The role can be physically demanding, requiring moderate moving and handling. You will work a 37.5‑hour week (average) shift rota pattern that includes daytime, evenings, overnight, weekends and Bank Holidays, once you have achieved competence during a satisfactory probationary period, for which appropriate AFC enhancements will be paid.

Job responsibilities
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
* Perform work duties to the standards required as an HCPC Biomedical Scientist
* Undertake correct procedures for handling specimens, pre‑ and post‑analysis
* Maintain and operate equipment used in the preparation and analysis of specimens
* Perform a range of laboratory tests autonomously and demonstrate understanding of the scientific basis for tests and disease processes under investigation
* Demonstrate awareness of factors affecting sample integrity, risks associated with reagents or methods, and other tests indicated by analysis outcomes
* Use the main laboratory computer system in accordance with service requirements

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* Degree (or equivalent) suitable for HCPC registration
* HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientist
* Uses continuing professional development as a means of self‑development
* IBMS membership
* NBTS Introduction to Blood Transfusion
* Completion of relevant external analyser courses
* NBTS Transfusion Specialist certificate
* BBTS Transfusion Specialist certificate
Knowledge & Experience
* Experience as a specialist in a clinical pathology laboratory
* Understanding of health and safety legislation pertaining to clinical laboratories
* Experience of the components of a quality management system
* Experience of dealing with cold chain issues
* Problem‑solving ability
* Extended specialist experience such as blood film review and non‑routine coagulation
* Experience of working as a BMS in Blood Sciences
* Experience of UKAS/MHRA inspections
