Assistant Clinical Nurse/ AHP Lecturer

We have a vacancy for a Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional to join the Undergraduate Teaching Team as Assistant Clinical Nurse / AHP Lecturer.

The post holder will work alongside the existing managerial team in line managing the Newcastle University teaching team; co‑ordinating, planning and delivering the Newcastle University UG Medical Education MBBS curriculum alongside the current speciality teaching teams; leading in some of the more complex planning and delivery of key concepts of medical education. The post holder will also have significant responsibility for student well‑being and supporting the professional development of the team.


Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role will include working collaboratively alongside the current management team with responsibility for recruiting into and managing the undergraduate teaching team, co‑ordinating the planning, delivery, assessment and evaluation of the Newcastle curriculum in both the classroom and clinical environment for students across the five years of the MBBS programme. The post holder will also be responsible for developing and maintaining the Undergraduate Department quality processes; supporting professional development of staff; ensuring excellent student experience; organising and developing clinical placements and placement areas; delivering evidence‑based teaching sessions to medical students; mentoring staff and medical students and providing pastoral support; playing a key role in ensuring that the required standards/targets for delivery of Undergraduate Medical Education are met.

Job responsibilities

To work collaboratively alongside the Clinical Nurse Lecturer with responsibility for managing the Undergraduate team and co‑ordinating the planning, delivery, assessment and evaluation of the Newcastle Curriculum in both the classroom and clinical environment for students across the five years of the MBBS programme.

To work collaboratively with the Clinical Nurse Lecturer to develop the Undergraduate Department quality processes, development of staff and student experience.

To be responsible for developing and organising clinical placements, delivering evidence based teaching sessions, mentoring staff and medical students and providing pastoral support.

To demonstrate innovative teaching and lecturing skills across a wide range of educational opportunities, including lectures, tutorials, bedside teaching / teaching in the clinical areas, mock ward and simulation sessions. The role requires the use of advanced technology with video and live streaming options.

To play a key role in ensuring that the required standards/targets for delivery of Medical Education are met.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* NMC Registered nurse / Allied Health Professional with experience of autonomous working
* Degree in a health care related or educational subject
* Clinical skills or equivalent qualification
* Management or leadership qualification
* Masters Degree in health or educational subject
* Teaching qualification such as PGCE


Skills and Knowledge

* Demonstrable IT skills using a variety of presentation platforms
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills
* Demonstrable teaching skills
* Good organisational ability
* Understanding of Clinical Governance and awareness of NHS policy
* Knowledge of the Newcastle Medical School undergraduate curriculum
* Ability to multitask and prioritise workload
* Able to supervise staff and work as part of a team as well as autonomously
* Ability to work without supervision
* Flexible attitude towards work
* Experience of clinical risk management
* Experience of being involved in audit or research
* Understanding of educational theory


Experience

* Experience of and ability to work in a multi‑professional team
* Evidence of teaching experience in a learning environment
* Recent clinical experience working in health care
* Experience of workload management and autonomous decision making
* Evidence of professional development and revalidation
* Awareness of current issues in healthcare, standards of professional practice and policy requirements
* Experience of training in/teaching simulation
* Experience of giving feedback using feedback models
* Experience of using virtual IT within a professional role
* Experience with complex scheduling and timetabling
* Experience of leading a team or supporting the management of junior staff
* Competence in use of standard IT (MS word, excel)
* Competent in the use of MS Teams


Physical skills

* Ability to undertake movement between teaching sites and departments.
* Ability to sit at workstations as necessary to perform admin and teaching tasks
* Moving and handling as per trust policy
