We are currently recruiting on behalf of a well-established packaging company for a skilled Mechanical Maintenance Engineer / Mechanical Fitter to join their site in Essex. This is a hands‑on role within a fast-paced manufacturing environment, offering excellent earning potential and long-term stability.
Key Responsibilities
* Maintain and repair production machinery
* Diagnose faults and carry out mechanical repairs
* Perform preventative maintenance to minimise downtime
* Set up machinery for production runs
* Replace components including bearings, belts, chains, and motors
* Respond promptly to breakdowns and restore production
* Support machinery upgrades and continuous improvement initiatives
Requirements
* Proven experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
* Strong mechanical maintenance and fault-finding skills
* Experience working with gearboxes, motors, and conveyors
* Ability to strip down and rebuild machinery
* Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and solve problems
Preferred Experience
* Background in paper, packaging, or cardboard manufacturing
* Knowledge of pneumatics and/or hydraulics
* Multi-skilled maintenance experience

Working Hours
Expected Weekly Hours: 54 hours
* Monday – Thursday: 06:00 – 17:00
* Friday: 06:00 – 13:30
* Saturday: 06:00 – 11:00
Core Hours (38 hours/week):
* Monday – Thursday: 07:30 – 16:00
* Friday: 06:00 – 13:30
Overtime:
* Paid at time-and-a-half
* Approx. 16 hours overtime per week
Important: This role involves a 54‑hour working week, with overtime forming a regular and expected part of the schedule.
