Consultant Thoracic Surgery

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a remarkable opportunity to join our thoracic surgical team.

Job Title: Thoracic Consultant Surgeon

Start Date: October or ASAP

Contract Type: Permanent

Main duties of the job

This is a new permanent post to support the expanding thoracic surgical service, a tertiary unit at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

Extensive experience in advanced minimally invasive techniques is essential. The thoracic surgeons work in a shared job plan and, with the new colleague, will participate in a 1 in 7 rota for on calls. You and other consultant colleagues will be expected to cover each other's absences on annual or study leaves. You will be required to participate in medical audit, medical education and consultant appraisal for revalidation.

Job responsibilities

  • Full participation in the thoracic surgery service and provision of expertise and support to other specialists as required.
  • Operating lists (VATS expertise essential).
  • MDT meetings.
  • Outpatient clinics, including peripheral virtual clinics.
  • Ward rounds.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
  • Higher research degree (MD/PhD).
  • Specialist Register.

Aptitudes and skills

  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams.
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff.
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly.
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Previous experience at consultant level in thoracic surgery.
  • Experience with managing thoracic trauma patients.
  • Previous robotic surgery experience.
  • Research interest.
