Job Description:
General Description of Position: Under the general direction and supervision of the Campus Dean of Students and the Administrative Director of Residence Life, the Assistant Director of Residence Life directs the day-to-day operations of the campus residence halls. This position advises and supervises student programming in the residence halls, ensures the safety and welfare of all residents, and enforces all residence hall policies and procedures in accordance with College policy. This is a twelve-month, 260-day live-in position, with an unfurnished apartment provided. Hours of work will be arranged on a 40-hour workweek for this full-time, regular position. Evening, overnight, and weekend student supervision are regular parts of the job.
Essential Functions
* Assist in Developing Housing Policies: Assists in developing and implementing housing policies and procedures consistent with College policy under the guidance of the Administrative Director of Residence Life.
* Policy Enforcement: Enforces established policies and procedures equitably and fairly. Serves as an intermediary between students, resident assistants, and administration.
* Supervises Resident Assistants: Interview, select, evaluate, and directly supervise the work of the Resident Assistants in conjunction with the Residence Life Coordinator. Conducts in-service training for Resident Assistants.
* Provides Residence Life Programming: In cooperation with the Residence Life Coordinator and the Resident Assistants, plan, organize, prepare, and implement residence life programming options that foster academic, social, cultural, and personal growth. Coordinate programming options with the Student Life Coordinator and plan activities through the campus Prevention Programming Team. Evaluate the success of programming through co-curricular assessment tools.
* Coordinates and Supervises Room Inspections: Supervise and/or conduct routine inspections of all rooms and apartments for safety, health, and welfare.
* Maintains Student Files: Maintain student files and report student status to the Dean of Students and the Business Office.
* Maintenance and Upkeep: In cooperation with the campus maintenance department, ensure that the housing facilities and equipment are maintained in operational condition.
* Monitors Residence Security: In cooperation with the Campus Safety & Security Coordinator and the security company, ensure that overall security measures are maintained. Continuously evaluate and alter student safety and security measures, if and when needed. Ensure that an accurate inventory of keys is available and current. Ensure buildings are secure.
* Supervises Check-In and Check-Out: Check new students into student housing each term. Check graduates and students leaving student housing at the end of each term.
* Manage Residence Life Budget: Utilize an annual budget to monitor expenditures throughout the year, and to work within the budget with the guidance of the Administrative Director – Residence Life.
* Student Housing Tours/Marketing: Assist with showing rooms to prospective students for tours and special events. In collaboration with Public Information and the Administrative Director of Residence Life, develop promotional materials to encourage students to live on campus. Work with Admissions staff to disseminate information to prospective students.
* Public Relations: Maintain good public relations with the college community and the community by keeping them apprised of student activities. Participate in community organizations as encouraged.
* Coordinates and Performs Other Functions as Requested: Organize, plan, and implement other functions as assigned by the Administrative Director of Residence Life or the Dean of Students.
* Promote a Culture of Belonging: Support and promote an environment of belonging where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to contribute. Foster a community where each individual and their varied perspectives enrich the educational experience and create a safe and respectful environment. Support the College’s policies and programming related to access, fair employment, and equal opportunities for all.
Marginal Functions
* Assist in developing and justifying room rate increases.
* Supervise the use and upkeep of recreational and computer equipment and facilities.
* Provide appropriate counseling and referral assistance for students.
* Perform other duties or functions as required in other divisions/programs/areas.
* Work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Schedules are subject to change based on the College’s needs and may include outside of regular hours or during emergencies.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Help students with college adjustment concerns and make appropriate referrals.
* Convey the lifestyle and responsibilities associated with residential living.
* Recognize, identify, and resolve potential student problems.
* Articulate Residence Life policies effectively verbally and in writing.
* Develop rapport and communicate effectively with students, alumni, faculty/staff, administration, and community groups.
* Apply fair disciplinary sanctions when policies are violated.
* Organize and implement student programming for residential students.
* Use a computer for word processing, database management, email, and administrative functions.
* Physical ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount frequently or constantly; mobility including using stairs is required.
* Communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
* Possess or be able to demonstrate the above skills and abilities, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Minimum Qualifications
* Associate’s degree in psychology, sociology, education, counseling, social work, human development, or related field. Experience in Residence Life can substitute for one year of the degree.
* One (1) year of experience working with students in a college environment or related fields.
* Six (6) months of supervisory or managerial experience, paid or volunteer.
Desired Qualifications
* Bachelor’s Degree, including at least 12 credit hours in relevant fields.
* One (1) year of residence hall experience, such as living or working as a Resident Assistant, Assistant Director, or similar role.
