Health Care Support Worker

Children and Young Peoples Outpatient Clinic is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, flexible individual to join our dynamic team You will play a pivotal role in welcoming and receiving children, young people and their parents to Childrens Clinic

The Successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and be able to work within a busy team but also on their own initiative.

General duties will include:

* participation in Consultant and Nurse Led Clinics
* supporting care pathway for children attending for medical and/or surgical day case procedures
* communication play and activities for children and young people
* general admin and clerical duties

Childrens clinic is a growing service which will provide learning opportunities for the successful candidate and the chance to develop new skills such as venepuncture among others.

This is a countywide role, with Children and Young People clinics running at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Alexandra Hospital and Kidderminster Treatment Centre, so applicant must hold a driving license and have access to a car.


Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose:

The Health Care Support Worker is a member of theward/department team who implements prescribed care and/or undertakes somehigher-level clinical activities as directed by a registered nurse. The maindimensions of the role are to:

To support registered health care staff to deliver high quality,compassionate health care to patients in accordance with assessed needs andcare plans.

To support the clinical team with day to day supervision ofjunior staff and students.

To have the ability to use your own initiative, independentlyand as part of a team, in order to accommodate changing demands on the widerclinical team.

To support the ward/department staff to provide a high qualityservice.

Undertakes a range of delegated clinical care duties, acting onown initiative where appropriate, supported by accessible supervision.

Key Duties:

Your delegated daily duties will be varied but may include:

Assist with the maintenance of patient hygiene.

Assist with serving meals and feeding of patients, includingreporting patients intake and recording on charts as appropriate. Escalating toregistered staff any concerns relating to nutritional intake.

Assist with patients elimination needs, including recordingoutputs where appropriate and collecting and testing urine and stool samples.

Supporting registered staff by undertaking delegated clinicaltasks.

Assisting with the recording and safe keeping of patientsproperty/valuables.

Moving and repositioning of patients.

Dressing/undressing of patients.

Making of occupied and unoccupied beds, tying up of dirty linenbags and despatching to laundry and replenishing of linen and stock cupboards.

Cleaning and tidying examination rooms/clinic areas.

Assist with patients mobilisation, ensuring safe environment andusing appropriate techniques.

Assist with occupational, physiotherapy and recreationalactivities.

Assist in the care of relatives and visitors.

Assist with the care of patients in isolation.

Chaperone professional staff where appropriate and accompanypatients to other departments as necessary.

Be involved in patient booking in/admission procedures byintroducing patients to ward/department area as directed by registered nurse.

Be adaptable and flexible to working in various areas of thedepartment/ward as required.

Assist the multi professional team to prepare and supportpatients undergoing treatment and/or investigation maintaining privacy anddignity at all times.

Communication and relationships

The Health Care Support Workers relationship with both staff andpatients should be discreet, bearing in mind that all information regardingpatients must be kept confidential.

Report to the nurse in charge of the ward/department matters ofconcern relating to patients and the ward/department environment.

Answer the telephone, refer to appropriate person.

Attend to ward/department reports and meetings when appropriate.

Be aware of the need to greet visitors to the ward/departmentand ascertain the purpose of their visit.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health and safety atwork in order to maintain a safe environment.

Undertake duties outside your working area (e.g. delivery andcollection) to assist in maintaining good communication.

Participate in patient handovers.

Follow trust and national policies, participating in discussionson proposed changes to procedures as appropriate.

To use a range of verbal and no-verbal communication strategiesto support patients, including potential occasional exposure to patientsexhibiting challenging or aggressive behaviour.

Clinical Support

Assess patient condition through observations, test result,assess comfort of patient and instigate emergency procedures as indicated.

Where training has been provided and competence assured, yourdelegated daily duties will be varied depending on area in which you areworking. These may include (but are not restricted to):

Taking and recording and monitoring of patient observations toinclude, blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturations, temperature andrespirations. This includes accurate calculation and recording of NEWS 2/NPEWS(early warning score) and escalation to registered staff as indicated by score.

Blood glucose monitoring.

Support registered staff and the ward team in responding toemergency situations

Measuring and recording of patient height and weight from Birthonwards

Apply a simple range of dressings using both clean and aseptictechniques and taking of wound swabs as indicated.

Undertake ECG recordings.

Collect blood samples (peripheral or venous) as directed by aregistered nurse, ensuring its safe storage, transport or disposal asappropriate.

Collection of sputum samples.

Undertake removal of venous cannula.

Removal of male and female catheters.

Undertake an associate link/link nurse role where appropriate.

Recording actions accurately and contemporaneously in relevantIT systems

Cleaning

Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of areas and equipment asinstructed. Escalate areas of concerns. Completion of Cleaning records andschedules

Clerical duties

Reception and clerical duties competently and regularly as partof day to day function of role and to cover clinic administrator when required.

Competent use of trust clinical systems within clinicalgovernance framework

Education

To engage in and complete relevant short courses to supportpatient care and clinical duties. This should include the completion theNational Care Certificate and any other internal development opportunities.

To support other health care assistants and junior staff throughmentorship and local induction.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Basic education
* Recognised qualification in English
* NVQ 2 Achieved Care Certificate


Skills and abilities

* Basic numeracy, good verbal and written communication skills. Legible handwriting. Ability to maintain high standards of patient care and work with a confidential manner. Basic IT Skills including access email
* Extended IT skills, Knowledge of PAS, Bluespier. ICE requesting systems Willingness to undertake venepuncture and cannulation Or Venepuncture and cannulation competencies


Experience

* Previous experience of working as a Health Care Assistant in an acute hospital environment/outpatient/day case setting
* working with children within a health care setting, Previous experience in contact with children and young people
* Aware of professional and self-image. Flexible and adaptable Flexible attitude to routine /non routine work. Good interpersonal skills and demonstrate an understanding of diversity and compassion. Responds well to change and innovation.
* Ability to identify personal development needs.
