Job Overview
A Senior User Researcher practitioner who is able to plan and lead user research activities in larger teams and on more complex services. At this level, you will be expected to build user‑centred practices, align research activities with service objectives, and supervise and develop other researchers.
Responsibilities
* Build user‑centred practices in new teams.
* Align user research activities with wider plans to inform a service proposition.
* Supervise and develop other user researchers to assure and improve research practice.
Skills and Qualifications
* GDS experience essential.
* Analysis and synthesis. Understand and help teams apply a range of methods to analyse research data and synthesise findings. Engage sceptical colleagues, advise on methods, and critique findings to assure best practice.
* Inclusive research. Help teams understand user diversity, include all users in appropriate activities, and advocate for accessible services.
* Research skills. Experience of adopting a wide range of user research methods and planning research for complex user journeys.
* Society and technology. Understand the social and technological context for government services and align research to changing user behaviour.
* Strategic insight. Understand the problem being solved and align research to inform decision‑making.
* Technical understanding. Knowledge of technologies used to build and operate digital services and collaboration across disciplines.
* User‑centred and agile practices. Experience of embedding user‑centred practices in agile workflows and advocating for research.
Deliverables – User Research
* High‑quality research to plan, facilitate, analyse, and manage data effectively.
* Research plan created, maintained, and signed off at each phase with relevant methods, questions, and hypotheses; informed consent gathered; accessibility and low digital skill considerations documented.
* Research data recorded on planning software (e.g., Jira, Trello, Lucid Spark) and stored securely per government regulations.
* Documentation updated and findings reused for iterative development; shared across the service to build empathy.
* Service user needs articulated and evidence of informing stakeholder priorities.
* Build stakeholder and team capability through knowledge sharing and risk communication with the Head of Customer Experience/Senior User Researcher.
* Facilitate continuous improvement and coach teams on appropriate research tools and techniques.
Success Criteria
* Projects completed by 16th June.
* Timely outputs, data management, and analysis to inform product development.
* Documentation approved via the COP process and shared in ceremonies.
* Research approved by Senior User Researcher / Head of Customer Experience.
