Job Summary
This is a full time (10 PA) locum post. It will be based across sites with clinics at both Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe Hospitals. Job share would be considered, 5 PAs per candidate.
The Paediatric department has been successful in getting approval to expand consultant presence by new consultants to meet future workload & deliver safe high quality care for all children in Buckinghamshire with focus on trust care values.
We are seeking a keen, dynamic general paediatrician with a special interest that will complement the current team.
The post holder will carry out general paediatric and neonatal duties and participate in overnight on‑call consultant rota. There will also be weekend evening "twilight" shifts in the Paediatric ED to support mid‑grades & protect capacity.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join a team of consultants and undertake inpatient and outpatient work in neonates and general paediatrics including in‑patients and children admitted to the observation ward. In these areas we have attending weeks, on‑call activities on a pro‑rated basis, and specialist clinics in their sub‑specialty.
There will be three clinics every week across both hospitals to ensure local access. Candidates may organise clinics and develop a service benefitting children of Buckinghamshire. Time for service development is given in the job plan.
The post holder will be Paediatrician of the week (POW) and Neonatologist of the week (NOW) totalling seven per year. There will also be attending weeks for the children's observation unit; confirmed at appointment (1½‑3½ weeks depending on rota restructure). During these days the post holder will have no other clinical commitments.
The post holder will have resident duty of "twilight" shifts 1600‑2200 within the Children Emergency Department. This will be weekend twilight shift covering Friday‑Sunday evenings for four weekends a year to meet future standards.

The existing general paediatric consultant rota is designed around a 45 week rolling cycle. A planned change to 60 week rolling rota is proposed, with shared POW/NOW weeks among 15 consultants. First night on‑call (non‑resident) are shared equally. A second on‑call covers Children's Day unit at Wycombe hospital and provides backup for the first on‑call in emergencies.
With the new Children's ED department opening, on‑call weeks are Monday‑Friday between the team. Each consultant has 10.5 on‑call weeks per year. POW/NOW weeks run Friday‑Thursday. Weekly, 3½ weeks a year the consultant will also cover Children's Observation Unit (COU) Monday‑Friday co‑located with the new ED. This may change to 1½ weeks with rota redesign.
We are redesigning the rota with 60 week rolling rota, potentially decreasing on‑call weeks for the rest of the 15‑person team. The second overnight duty may be stopped, reducing the supplement. Second on‑call daytime at Wycombe will continue.
Eight consultants share weekday evening twilight shifts. Fixed days cover the year by paired consultants doing 26 shifts per year. Additionally, each covers 2.3 twilight weekends. The post holder is part of the 7‑consultant group.
In combination, 1st and 2nd on‑call mean a 1‑in‑7.5 rota, attracting a Category A ‑ Medium Frequency (5%) on‑call supplement. This may shift to 1‑in‑15 Category A‑low frequency (3%).
