ROLE: Health and Safety (QHSE) Manager – National Grid Account
HOURS: 40 hours a week
LOCATION: Midlands (Predominantly), with nationwide site coverage.

We're looking for a Health and Safety (QHSE) Manager – National Grid Account who will be responsible for ensuring our operations across the UK are carried out safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with our Integrated Business Management System and current CDM/construction H&S legislation. This role requires regular travel to various sites nationwide, with occasional overnight stays depending on geographical location and project requirements.
Role Responsibilities:
1. Risk Management: Identify and minimise risks to people, property, and the environment. Conduct specialist assessments (COSHH, DSE, and high-risk activities) that fall outside the scope of operational managers.
2. Compliance & Auditing: Perform regular site audits and inspections to ensure adherence to HSE legislation, British Standards, and company policies.
3. Incident Investigation: Lead investigations into accidents and near misses, producing detailed statistical reports and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
4. Safety Culture: Act as a visible safety role model, driving a proactive safety culture through toolbox talks, safety briefings, and coaching for site teams.
5. Operational Support: Assist in contract mobilisations to ensure all QHSE matters are controlled from day one.
6. Stakeholder Engagement: Represent the QHSE agenda at regional and national meetings, fostering strong relationships with clients and enforcing authorities.
7. Assist management to ensure that Mitie operations are carried out in a safe and efficient manner.
8. Implement the integrated business management system; ensuring a robust and efficient system is maintained, which complies with the requirements of the business and third‑party quality, health, safety and environmental accreditations.
9. Identify and minimise the risk of accidents to persons, property or the environment.
10. Support all parts of the QHSE function when required including investigations, meetings, audits and training as a minimum to ensure that the QHSE function across Group is as efficient and pragmatic as possible.
11. Maintain an up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation and codes of practice applicable to the company's business.
12. Ensure operational managers and personnel have the appropriate technical competence to work safely by the identification and provision of formal training needs.
13. Assist operational managers with the identification and development of practical and effective safe working practices.
14. Provide advice and guidance to operational managers and employees on QHSE matters.
15. Ensure operational managers of the company are aware of their legal and company responsibilities.
16. Carry out assessments that are outside the competence of operational managers i.e. Significant Risk, COSHH, DSE and other assessments.
17. Investigate accidents and incidents and produce statistical information in relation to QHSE performance.
18. Investigate and manage all QHSE documentation relating to potential/actual insurance claims.
19. Assist in contract mobilisations to ensure all QHSE matters have been appropriately considered and controlled.
20. Work with the QHSE team to develop and implement QHSE strategies to meet divisional and group objectives.
21. Produce QHSE reports as requested by the QHSE Lead within the requested timeframes.
22. Attend Regional and National meetings as required to represent the QHSE agenda.
23. In conjunction with the QHSE team establish and maintain the Regional QHSE forums to enable engagement and communication with employees.
24. Where required in consultation with line manager liaise with relevant enforcing authorities.
25. Develop an understanding of the Mitie Intranet in order to access relevant documentation.
26. Attend performance appraisals and work to agreed personal improvement and development plans.
27. Represent the QHSE Lead as required in their absence.
28. Any other reasonable “ad hoc” duties as required by the needs of the business.
Required Qualifications:
29. Qualifications: NEBOSH Diploma and IOSH membership (Grad status).
30. Experience: Proven experience in a multi‑site, multi‑disciplinary organisation, preferably within the Facilities Management/Projects or industrial sectors.
31. Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
32. Mobility: A full UK driving licence is required for nationwide travel. Flexibility for occasional overnight stays is essential.
33. Independence: A self‑starter capable of working unsupervised and managing their own diary effectively.
34. Maintain an up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation and codes of practice applicable to the company's business.
35. Ensure operational managers have the appropriate technical competence to work safely through identified training needs.
36. Assist operational managers with safe working practices.
37. Provide QHSE advice and guidance to operational staff.
38. Computer literate (Word, Excel spreadsheets).
39. Able to work unsupervised and on own initiative.
40. Environmental Management.
41. Experience of industrial work & work at heights.
42. Experience of Integrated Facilities Management sector, particularly Hard or Soft Services where applicable.
43. Experience of multi‑site, multi‑discipline organisations.
44. Detailed knowledge of risk assessment and management.
45. Ability to work in a commercial/corporate, client‑facing environment.
46. Ability to manage meetings.
47. Able to deliver training on a range of subjects to varying abilities.
