Job Summary
We are seeking a highly reliable and experienced individual for a critical seasonal, on-call role as a Single-Manned Gritting Driver/Operative. This position is weather-dependent and requires exceptional flexibility and responsiveness during the winter season. The primary responsibility is the safe and efficient delivery of timely gritting and snow clearance services across multiple sites to ensure client safety and operational continuity.
Working Pattern and Commitment
* Seasonal Duration: The role is active during the typical winter maintenance period (e.g., October to April), as dictated by adverse weather and contractual obligations.
* On-Call Basis: Work is weather-triggered and not guaranteed. You will only be required to work when the weather forecast meets the pre-defined gritting trigger points.
* Notification: You will be notified in the morning (typically before noon) that a gritting run is required and will be expected to attend work that evening for the gritting shift.
* Flexibility & Reliability: Due to the critical nature of the service, an unwavering commitment to rapid response and attendance is essential, including working unsociable hours, nights, weekends, and public holidays at short notice.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Duties:
* Vehicle Gritting: Safely operate gritting vehicles to spread rock salt and other de-icing agents on roads, car parks, pathways, and other defined areas according to prescribed routes.
* Hand Gritting/Manual Clearance: Execute manual hand-gritting and snow clearance using shovels and pedestrian spreaders in areas inaccessible to the gritting vehicle, ensuring excellent service standards.
* Single-Manned Operation: Work independently to complete all assigned routes and duties efficiently, maintaining a high level of situational awareness in challenging weather conditions.
Technology and Administration:
* Mobile App Utilisation: Accurately use bespoke mobile applications, including Jobwatch, Workpal, and Formulate, for:
* Receiving, viewing, and acknowledging real-time job allocations and route details.
* Recording accurate start/finish times, site attendance, and work completed (proof of service).
* Logging material usage (salt) accurately.
* Reporting vehicle defects, operational incidents, and hazards immediately and digitally.
* Communication: Maintain clear, prompt, and professional communication with the Operations/Control team via the designated apps or phone, providing updates on route progress and any issues encountered.
Health, Safety, and Vehicle Care:
* Vehicle Checks: Conduct and record thorough daily pre-use vehicle and equipment checks.
* Compliance: Adhere strictly to all road traffic laws, driver hours regulations, and company Health & Safety policies.
* Depot Duties: Responsible for the safe loading of salt into the vehicle, cleaning and washing the vehicle and spreading equipment after each run, and ensuring the depot area is maintained.
* Telehandler Operations (For Certified Drivers): Safely and efficiently operate a Telehandler to load gritting vehicles with salt/material, if certified.
Required Skills and Experience
* Hold a valid driving licence suitable for operating gritting vehicles standard car licence,7.5t license, 18t Licence
* Ability to commit to an on-call, weather-dependent working pattern with morning notification for evening work.
* Competent in using mobile technology/smartphones and able to quickly learn and operate apps such as Jobwatch, Workpal, and Formulate.
* Physically fit and able to undertake manual handling tasks (hand-gritting and shovelling).
Desirable
* Valid Telehandler Operator Certificate (for higher pay rate).
* Winter Maintenance qualification (e.g., City & Guilds/Lantra for Winter Service Operations).
* Clean driving record.
Job Type: Temporary
Contract length: 6 months
Pay: £17.00-£18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 1 – 40 per week
