Position Overview

The Nursery Cleaning Operative plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, hygienic, and welcoming environment for children, staff, and visitors. Working within the nursery setting, the cleaning operative is responsible for the daily cleaning and sanitisation of all areas, ensuring that the highest standards of cleanliness and infection control are consistently upheld. This role is crucial in supporting the health, wellbeing and comfort of the children and staff, and in meeting regulatory requirements for childcare environments.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Daily Cleaning of Nursery Rooms: Carry out thorough daily cleaning of all nursery rooms, including playrooms, sleep rooms, nappy changing areas, staff areas, kitchens, entrances, corridors, offices, and restroom facilities.
* Surface Sanitisation: Wipe down and disinfect all surfaces, including tables, chairs, door handles, light switches, windowsills, and shelving units, with approved cleaning agents.
* Floor Cleaning: Vacuum and mop all hard floors; vacuum carpets and rugs; ensure all floor surfaces are clean.
* Toilet and Changing Area Maintenance: Clean and disinfect all toilet and washroom facilities, including sinks and toilets, and empty bins.
* Kitchen and Food Preparation Area Cleaning: Clean kitchen surfaces. Ensure all bins are emptied daily.
* Waste Management: Empty bins throughout the nursery daily. Replace liners and clean bins regularly.
* Report any issues, health and safety concerns, or shortages of cleaning supplies to the Nursery Manager promptly.
* Adherence to Health & Safety: Follow all relevant health and safety procedures, including the proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals, correct use of equipment, and use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
* Infection Control: Implement infection prevention and control measures as dictated by nursery policy and current public health guidance, including during outbreaks of illnesses.
* Other Duties: Undertake any additional cleaning or related duties as requested by the Nursery Manager or senior staff.

Person Specification

Essential Skills and Experience:

* Previous experience in a cleaning role, ideally within a childcare, healthcare, or educational setting.
* Understanding of infection control and the importance of maintaining high standards of cleanliness.
* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
* Good time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and work efficiently.
* Attention to detail and commitment to quality work.
* Reliable, trustworthy, and punctual.
* Good communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
* Flexibility to respond to changing needs within the nursery.
* Good physical fitness as this role requires regular standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying of cleaning equipment and supplies.

Desirable Attributes:

* Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate preferred.
* Relevant cleaning or health and safety certification (e.g., COSHH, infection prevention).
* Experience working in environments with young children and an understanding of their needs.
* A positive, proactive attitude and willingness to go the extra mile for the benefit of the nursery community.

Working Hours

Monday to Friday, 16:30 – 18:30 each day.

Working all year, except bank holidays and nursery shutdown weeks (1 week at Easter and 2 weeks at Christmas) and an additional 2 weeks holiday of choice.

Health, Safety and Safeguarding

* Strictly follow all health and safety guidelines, including safe storage of chemicals, correct lifting techniques, and use of PPE.
* Immediately report any hazards or incidents that could pose a risk to children or staff.
* Maintain confidentiality regarding all matters related to children, families, and staff encountered during the course of work.

Job Type: Permanent

Pay: £15.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 per week

Experience:

* Commercial cleaning: 1 year (required)
