JOB PURPOSE
To work under the guidance of the Assistant Headteacher: Inclusion & SEND and the Director of Learning Support to:
* Support children with Special Educational Needs within the school by mentoring and providing support, administering the Code of Practice, and supporting the department generally.
WORK PERFORMED
Supporting students:
* Be responsible for supporting named students with EHC Plans in classrooms.
* Support students through intervention strategies, communicate with them and their parents/carers.
* Be aware of the specific needs of the students and how to meet them.
* Aid effective learning and progress by:
o Clarifying and simplifying instructions.
o Ensuring students can use provided materials and amending them if necessary.
o Motivating and encouraging students.
o Assisting in areas of weakness such as handwriting, reading, spelling.
o Helping students complete homework and classwork.
o Encouraging independent learning habits.
* Liaise with teachers/SENCO to devise and deliver suitable alternative learning activities and interventions.
* Keep families informed of the child's needs and progress, and secure positive family support and involvement.
* Provide information and advice to students to help them make choices about their own learning and behaviour.
* Assist students with transition periods to overcome barriers.
Supporting Teachers:
* Work with teaching colleagues to review schemes of work.
* Differentiate work for all abilities and prepare appropriate resources.
* Plan and negotiate with staff to remove barriers and address difficulties faced by children with SEND.
* Support ongoing improvement of students’ learning experiences.
* Assist teachers with learning activities in the classroom.
Supporting the SENCO & Director of Learning Support:
* Participate in quality assurance processes, gather feedback, and participate in reviews.
* Monitor student resources.
* Keep records of student progress and work undertaken.
* Administer baseline testing.
* Help update the SEN register.
* Contribute to reviews of student progress.
* Communicate with parents/carers and other professionals as appropriate.
Other
* Maintain information and collate evidence for monitoring and evaluation.
* Complete administrative duties.
* Attend in-service training, meetings, and briefings.
* Undertake other duties as required, such as being a first aider.
