Role: Security Architect

A leading organisation within the defence sector is seeking a Security by Design Architect to join a long-term programme focused on strengthening the security posture across applications, infrastructure, and cloud platforms.
This role is critical to ensuring that security principles are embedded throughout the full development lifecycle, helping teams deliver secure, compliant, and resilient systems.
Candidates must be freelance contractors and have Security clearance or eligible for Security clearance due to the nature of the programme.
Key Responsibilities
Implement Security by Design principles across applications, infrastructure, and cloud environments.
Define and maintain secure development standards and guidelines for engineering teams.
Collaborate with development and architecture teams to embed security requirements early in the SDLC .
Design and implement technical security controls to mitigate vulnerabilities during development and production.
Monitor and improve cloud and infrastructure security posture .
Ensure alignment with key security standards including NIST 800-53, NIST 800-171, NIST 800-172, and NIS2 .
Conduct risk assessments, investigate incidents, and recommend security improvements.
Work cross-functionally to deliver secure architecture aligned with business and regulatory requirements.
Required Experience
Proven experience working as a Security Architect / Security by Design Architect
Strong understanding of secure development lifecycle (SSDLC / DevSecOps)
Hands-on experience securing cloud and infrastructure environments
Strong knowledge of NIST frameworks and NIS2 compliance
Experience identifying and mitigating application and infrastructure vulnerabilities
Ability to work with development teams to embed security requirements
