Location: Philharmonic Studio, MediaCityUK, Salford. Department: BBC Philharmonic. Job band: D. Contract: Permanent, Full-time.
Proposed salary range: £47,000 – £51,450 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. Flexible working will be discussed at offer stage, and there is no obligation to indicate preferences in the application.
Purpose of the Role
The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra is seeking a new Chief Producer to lead its audio output across various media platforms. This senior artistic role is central to the orchestra’s creative operations and involves close collaboration with BBC Radio 3 and other partners. The position is based at MediaCityUK and works alongside key team members to manage the orchestra’s recorded content. The Chief Producer will be responsible for producing recording sessions, offering artistic feedback, and ensuring all content meets BBC editorial standards before broadcast. The role demands a deep understanding of classical music recording practices and involves shaping content for radio, television, and streaming services in partnership with BBC presenters and editors.

Key Responsibilities and Impact
* Lead and inspire the production team to deliver high-quality recorded content across platforms, ensuring artistic excellence, timely delivery, and full compliance with BBC editorial standards.
* Produce audio recordings for radio, television, and streaming; act as primary liaison for BBC Radio 3 and other networks; maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners.
* Oversee editorial compliance, signing off all broadcast material in line with BBC Editorial, Legal, and Health & Safety guidelines; manage a safe recording environment under Noise at Work legislation.
* Collaborate with senior artistic staff to assess the artistic value of visiting artists and conductors; provide constructive feedback to musicians and staff to support continuous improvement.
* Stay informed on industry trends and drive innovation in content production to enhance recording quality and working practices.
Essential Criteria
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
* Proven experience in producing classical recordings, with strong knowledge of current techniques and technologies.
* Ability to plan and deliver multiple complex projects under pressure while maintaining high artistic and editorial standards.
* Comfortable working in fast-paced environments and adapting to changing priorities and challenges.
Desirable (but not required)
* Strong digital editing and music editing skills with hands-on experience using modern editing systems.
* Proven ability to shape engaging audio content, collaborating with editors, producers, and presenters on scripts, interviews, and programmes.
* Experience in diverse recording projects, including non-classical artists, amplified and staged productions, spatial audio, and unconventional venues.
* Commercial recording expertise, including familiarity with click track recording and professional studio environments.
* Excellent relationship-building skills with understanding of safety standards such as Noise at Work legislation in orchestral settings.
