Health & Safety Manager - Groundworks & Civil Engineering Salary: £60,000 - £70,000 Package Location: Near Crawley (Office & Site Based) Start: ASAP | Contract: Permanent Atkinson Baker Associates are currently recruiting a Health & Safety Manager for a well-established regional groundworks contractor based near Crawley. This is a standalone role requiring an individual ready to take full ownership of the company's safety culture. You will not just be "monitoring" safety; you will be driving it—ensuring that from the Director level down to the labourers on site, everyone goes home safe. The Role This is a hybrid position balancing time at the head office (near Crawley) with regular visits to active sites across the region. The business believes that safety is built on relationships, so you will be expected to be visible, approachable, and hands-on with the workforce. Key Responsibilities: RAMS Ownership: Producing and reviewing comprehensive Risk Assessments and Method Statements for complex groundworks (including deep drainage, excavations, and temporary works). Compliance Management: Maintaining the company training matrix, ensuring all CSCS/CPCS/NPORS qualifications are up to date, and booking training where required. Site Audits: Conducting regular site inspections and audits, producing reports, and ensuring corrective actions are closed out. Specialist Groundworks Safety: Overseeing specific risks such as trench collapse (shoring/box checks), silica dust control (cutting), HAVS monitoring, and lifting operations. Accident Investigation: Leading investigations into any incidents or near-misses and implementing lessons learned. Toolbox Talks: Delivering engaging safety briefings to site teams. Requirements Essential: Proven experience as a H&S Manager (or Senior Advisor) within the Groundworks or Civil Engineering sector. Essential: NEBOSH Construction Certificate (Diploma preferred) and TechIOSH / GradIOSH membership. Essential: Deep understanding of temporary works, deep excavations, and heavy plant operations. Essential: Strong administrative discipline to manage the training matrix and compliance paperwork. Essential: A proactive, "boots on the ground" approach—you must be comfortable engaging with site operatives, not just sitting in the office.
