Flexible / Global (Expert Panel Appointment - Remote with Site Visits as Required)
About the Engagement:
Our client is seeking an experienced Tank Engineering and Fabrication Expert to serve on a panel of three specialists resolving a niche technical dispute between a solar power plant owner and the EPC contractor. The matter concerns alleged defects in hot molten salt storage tanks used for high-temperature thermal energy storage.
Role Overview:
The selected expert will bring deep technical expertise in the design, fabrication, and construction of large, high-temperature molten salt tanks. The role involves independent review and technical judgment on fabrication quality, materials integrity, welding, thermal performance, and potential causes of observed defects. Prior experience supporting investigations, arbitrations, or expert determinations will be advantageous.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide independent technical assessment of molten salt tank fabrication, materials, and construction quality.
* Review project documentation, inspection records, and test reports to identify potential causes of tank defects or failures.
* Evaluate compliance with relevant design and fabrication standards (e.g., API, ASME, EN, or equivalent).
* Contribute technical expertise to the expert determination panel and assist in developing findings and recommendations.
* Participate in meetings, site visits, and deliberations as required under ICC expert rules.
* Deliver clear, well-reasoned, and evidence-based technical opinions.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
* Extensive hands-on experience (typically 15+ years) in tank fabrication and construction for high-temperature molten salt or thermal energy storage systems.
* Strong understanding of materials selection, metallurgy, and welding processes for elevated-temperature service.
* Proven experience applying relevant fabrication and inspection standards (e.g., API 650/620, ASME Section VIII, EN 13445, etc.).
* Direct involvement in defect investigation, root cause analysis, or quality assurance for large storage tanks.
* Excellent analytical and written communication skills for technical reporting and expert testimony.
Preferred Experience:
* Prior experience serving as an independent expert, technical advisor, or witness in engineering disputes or forensic investigations.
* Familiarity with solar thermal power plants, molten salt systems, or energy storage infrastructure.
* Chartered or Registered Professional Engineer status highly desirable.
Personal Attributes:
* Impartial, objective, and credible professional presence.
* Strong collaborative and problem-solving approach.
* Ability to communicate complex technical issues clearly and concisely.
