Job Summary
The Palatine Ward is a joint collaboration between haematology and transplant services, and the teenage and young adult (TYA) service, providing high quality care for adult patients with haematological malignancies and TYA (16‑24 year old) patients with all types of cancers. The ward also treats paediatric patients receiving radioiodine treatment.
We are looking for a motivated Band 6 NMC registered adult or children’s nurse to work in our fast‑paced, patient‑focused environment. You must want to develop new skills and knowledge around specialised cancer treatments and be passionate about haematology‑oncology.
Main Duties
* Work closely with the Senior Sister to manage the Palatine Ward and provide leadership in her absence.
* Deliver and document patient care in accordance with hospital policies, NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust policies.
* Administer specialised treatments of chemotherapy, transplants and blood products and assess educational and information needs of patients and families.
* Maintain liaison and discussion with other wards, departments, referring hospitals and community services.
* Refer appropriately both within and outside the Trust.
* Provide a positive role model for potential post holders by demonstrating competent skills matched to departmental needs.
* Ensure safe practice according to Trust policies and that all prescribed drugs and treatments comply with Trust Medicine Management Policy.
* Line‑manage members of the Palatine ward team and take charge of the department in the Senior Sister’s absence.
* Assist the Senior Sister with staff recruitment, retention, performance management, attendance, absence and competency documentation.
* Participate in risk assessments, incident reporting and local standard operating procedures.
* Support the Senior Sister in initiating and implementing change and promoting professional accountability.
* Develop and update protocols, patient information and team communication procedures.
Education & Professional Development
* Maintain awareness of current nursing practice and attend educational opportunities to stay up‑to‑date with haematology care.
* Supervise nursing staff, disseminate knowledge and current developments, and participate in appraisal programmes.
* Keep essential training up to date, including IV training and ECG competencies.
* Engage in research, audit and project work influencing practice and attend conferences, study days and MDTs.
* Undergo relevant programmes of study, gain teaching skills, develop managerial skills and promote equality and diversity.
About Us
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust runs a 31‑bedded ward with all en‑suite side rooms, specialist HEPA side rooms for isolating severely immunocompromised patients and a radioiodine radiotherapy room. The ward is JACIE accredited, carries out autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplants and offers innovative treatments such as CAR T‑cell therapy, supported by comprehensive training including UKONS‑certified SACT delivery. The Clinical Practice Facilitator (CPF) team supports education and development. The ward operates in small teams, providing 24‑hour care, symptom control, sepsis treatment and a holistic approach.
