Description Starting salary: £25,770 Contract type: Fixed term contract for 12 months Band: Grade 1 Location: Longmore House, Edinburgh, EH9 1SH Working Hours: Monday - Friday, 35 hours Interviews: To be held in person at Longmore House, Edinburgh on 28 th July or 4 th August 2025 Thank you for your interest in the post of Building Information Modelling (BIM) Technologist Trainee with Historic Environment Scotland (HES), based at Longmore House, Edinburgh. This is 12 month contract due to start in October 2025. Building information modelling (BIM) involves the generation and management of digital representations of buildings or other physical assets which also include information about the physical and functional characteristics of the building or object. You will work with our BIM team where you will be introduced to Building Information Modelling (BIM) and how it is applied in heritage conservation through documentation, digitisation, and collaboration. Through this post you will develop your core technological skills in BIM, with a focus on software and documentation creation. You will also work closely with our colleagues in the NIP (National Investments Projects) Team, contributing to the development of the upcoming Retrofit Lab project based at the Engine Shed, Stirling, As well as many other building projects currently active through the BIM Department. This post will be part of a wider programme of Conservation Traineeships. This is a training and development role for someone starting their career in the digital heritage sector which will build on basic knowledge and give opportunities to learn. All appropriate training and equipment will be provided. Key skills which this post will focus on are: 3D Parametric Modelling (For Architecture). Information Management to ISO19650 Standards. Collaboration and Communication. Scheduling Techniques. Presentation Skills. Public Speaking (if applicable). Research and Teaching (if applicable). You will work closely with HES’s BIM and NIP teams. Your day-to-day duties will include: Being an active member of the HES BIM and NIP teams in the office and in the field Creating a professional portfolio of work on live projects at HES, whilst building a professional network and feeding into BIM and NIP Workstreams. Contributing to HES Digital, BIM, and NIP outreach events. Run 1 – 2 sessions at the monthly BIM workshop, on a topic of your choice. Participate in external BIM groups such as BIM4Heritage, SFT (Scottish Futures Trust). Attend any BIM conferences within Scotland. Assisting with the preparation of data for outreach and AECO projects with HES colleagues and outside of the organisation. Preparing datasets using BIM software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Twinmotion, Sketchup etc.) as and when required. Take ownership of BIM projects covering modelling, information management, and document production, and environment setup and management. During your traineeship, you will have the opportunity to work across different teams within HES, attend site visits and assist on AECO projects. There will be the opportunity to attend conferences, BIM Working groups and attend external training courses. In parallel, there will be opportunities to engage with Investment Project delivery processes with both the NIP Team and their external delivery partners – consultants, specialist suppliers and contractors. As part of this role, you will be based at Longmore House, Edinburgh, there will also be occasional periods of working on-site that would involve travelling/driving across Scotland and staying away from home during the week. All travel expenses will be covered for additional travel from your base location (Longmore House), and all necessary equipment will be provided.
