About the role Prize Fellowships at the University of Bath are prestigious appointments for early career researchers to establish an independent research programme with a fast-track route to permanent appointment in a supportive and well-resourced environment. The scheme begins with an initial appointment to a fixed-term Research Fellow post with the strong expectation to transition to permanent Lectureship after three years. The Prize Fellow will be supported to recruit a PhD student to a relevant topic area, to be co-supervised with a senior colleague. During the fellowship there will be many opportunities for career development activities including, optionally, gaining teaching experience in preparation for transferring to the permanent Lectureship. Research expenses (including travel) of the Prize Fellow will covered up to £2,500 per year during the first three years. The Heilbronn Prize Fellowship is a joint venture with the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research (HIMR). During the first three years of the post, the Heilbronn Prize Fellow will spend 50% of their research time undertaking classified research at the direction of HIMR. The HIMR Bristol offices are easily accessible from the city of Bath via a short train journey. About the department The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath is a leading centre for research in pure and applied mathematics. We host 80 academic staff and over 100 PhD students and are home to a strong and growing Algebra Geometry and Number Theory research group. We have a strong track record of supporting the career development of Prize Fellows, with several previous fellows winning major grants such as Royal Society University Research Fellowships and progressing to Reader and Professor. About you We are seeking a collegiate and energetic individual with a desire to build a successful career at the University of Bath. You will have ambitious plans for your research programme, and a strong track record of delivery. The ideal candidate will also be familiar with the UK research funding landscape and should have credible plans for future grant applications. It is a condition of employment that the Prize Fellow holds, and continues to qualify for, a national security clearance (Developed Vetting) at the appropriate level from GCHQ; they are subject to provisions of the Official Secrets Act and restrictions on travel to certain countries. How to apply Applications comprise: A full academic CV. A statement of personal research plans for the three-year (0.5FTE) Fellowship. This should be up to 2 pages including references and, detailing the portion of the fellow’s work to be undertaken at the University of Bath (i.e. not covering Heilbronn internal work). Confirmation of security clearance status Answers to the following longlisting questions: Provide details of a major research achievement in your career so far. Describe the origin of the research question, your contribution to the project, and the impact of your work. Do not discuss Heilbronn internal work in your answer. Please provide details of how you have contributed to the academic environment in a previous role. What did you do and what were the benefits for colleagues?
