Who We Are Seeking
We are seeking a driven and technically curious Junior Naval Architect to join our team, supporting vessel performance and machinery & systems design. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a well‑rounded foundation across naval architecture, hydrodynamics, and onboard systems within a fast‑paced and innovative environment.
You will play a key role in supporting both the Naval Architecture and Machinery & Systems teams, contributing to the development of new and existing products. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys both analytical and hands‑on work, with a keen eye for detail and a passion for understanding how boats perform and operate in real‑world conditions.
A Day in the Life
In this role, your time will be split between performance‑focused naval architecture tasks and detailed machinery and systems modelling. You may start your day working alongside the Senior Naval Architect and concept teams to refine hull forms and develop efficient, high‑performance designs, before moving on to weight estimation work or setting up performance predictions using tools such as Maxsurf or CFD software.
Alongside this, you will support the Machinery & Systems team by creating detailed 3D models and production drawings for engine room systems, propulsion components, and onboard services. Regular collaboration with production teams and yard visits will help you build a strong practical understanding of how designs translate into build. You will also have opportunities to support sea trials and inclining experiments, gaining invaluable real‑world experience in vessel testing and performance validation.
Example Responsibilities
* Supporting hull form development to achieve efficient and high‑performing designs aligned with styling requirements
* Assisting in the design of hull features such as prop tunnels, thrusters, and exhaust systems
* Producing accurate weight estimates and tracking vessel weight throughout build via yard engagement
* Supporting performance predictions using tools such as Maxsurf, trial data, and CFD methods
* Creating 3D CAD models and production drawings using Siemens NX and AutoCAD
* Modelling and drafting machinery systems, including propulsion, steering, stabilisation, and auxiliary systems
* Producing detailed engine room system layouts (fuel, oil, hydraulic, fire, bilge, and ventilation systems)
* Modelling hotel systems including fresh water, waste systems, heating, and ventilation
* Managing drawing issue processes and ensuring all documentation is correctly released via ERP systems
* Supporting first‑of‑type trials, including lightship checks, ballast calculations, and performance validation
* Assisting with inclining experiments and stability booklet preparation when required
* Collaborating closely with production teams to resolve design and build challenges
To Be Considered for This Role You Should Have
* A minimum 2:2 BEng (Hons) degree in Naval Architecture or Yacht Design (ideally with exposure to composites)
* Strong computer literacy, including 3D CAD (ideally Siemens NX), AutoCAD 2D, Maxsurf, and Microsoft Excel
* An understanding of, or interest in, vessel performance, hydrodynamics, and onboard systems
* Knowledge of CFD tools (e.g. Siemens Star CCM+) would be beneficial
* Some exposure to boatbuilding or a nautical background (desirable)
* Strong ability to work with both 2D and 3D design tools
* High attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in drawings and calculations
* Good understanding of how different boat systems integrate and interact
* Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams
* Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks to deadlines
* A proactive approach with a willingness to learn and continuously develop technical knowledge
Benefits
The candidate will receive the following benefits as part of the Sunseeker employee package:
* A generous company pension scheme – 6% employer contribution
* Private medical insurance, including baby bonus and Digital GP (after 2 years)
* Dental insurance (after 2 years)
* Annual leave increases with continued service
* Health Assured EAP
* Trained Mental Health First Aiders
* Death in service scheme
* Employee discounts with a wide range of third party businesses (up to 30% off)
