Job Description
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA / telemetry systems would be beneficial.
Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. As part of our Technical Authority you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet our commitments to net zero carbon.
Responsibilities
* Manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules, for our electrical systems and equipment.
* Lead the delivery of high‑ and low‑voltage power and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment.
* Hold a national incident response role, which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
Qualifications
* Good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671/IET wiring regulations.
* Good working knowledge of control systems, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061, BS EN 13489 and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Knowledge and experience in the development and delivery of Safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Experience in testing, isolation and proving dead of high and low voltage electrical systems.
* Strong understanding of a risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including FMEA, reliability systems and processes.
* Experience drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work‑management, team‑working and communication skills.
* Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and registration as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working toward registration with realistic prospect within 12 months.
Working arrangements and benefits
This is a hybrid role; we will allocate a base location near to your home. Some travel and overnights may be required. You will have an incident management objective in your development plan and we’ll support you to find a role to suit your needs and circumstances. Appropriate training will be given.
