This position is an externally-funded PDRA position, supporting the NERC project Developing paper 'origami' eDNA sensors for real-time public surveillance of invasive species. The project aims to develop an easy-to-use paper-based sensor for monitoring invasive species using eDNA, providing stakeholders and citizen scientists with a practical tool. The successful candidate will work closely with partners at the University of Cranfield and UKCEH, contributing to various aspects of the wider project.
What will you be doing?
You will lead field-based testing of the eDNA sensor, focusing on its robustness and comparing it with current monitoring methods. Your responsibilities include:
1. Experimental testing of the eDNA sensor in laboratory and field settings, compared to traditional methods.
2. Collaborating with stakeholders to understand potential applications of the sensor.
3. Reviewing and quantifying challenges and costs associated with existing monitoring techniques.
The work will primarily be conducted in Lincolnshire and will involve travel to various field sites across the county.
What we're looking for
* PhD in a relevant field (e.g., ecology, molecular ecology, invasive species ecology) or nearing completion with research experience.
* Experience in field ecology; familiarity with eDNA is advantageous.
* Laboratory and field research experience.
* Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including statistics and bioinformatics.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, students, and stakeholders.
