What does an underwriter do?

A Property and Casualty (P&C) Underwriter evaluates risks and assess the potential for damage to property as well the likelihood of a customer being held legally responsible for injuries to employees or the public or damage to third party property. They then decide whether to insure, at what price and under what terms.

You’ll blend technical skill with real market presence. While you’ll handle the core underwriting responsibilities, you’ll also spend time meeting brokers, developing relationships, and working collaboratively to win and retain business. If you enjoy variety and prefer a role that goes beyond spending time at a desk, this could be the perfect fit.

You will play an active role in contributing towards the success of the team, underwriting business & build strong relationships.

Our Underwriters are pivotal to Allianz’s success, no risk is the same, so you’ll need to use your analytical and communication skills to influence brokers and develop strong trading relationships.

This is a hybrid role will involve working from home combined with a minimum of 3 days per week in our Maidstone office, in our Property and Casualty Team. There is an expectation you will be able to travel across the South-East and London for external meetings.

Salary Information

Pay: Starting at £28,000 per annum, with potential for negotiation based on relevant industry experience.

Pay is based on relevant experience, skills for the role, and location. Salary is only one part of our total reward package.

About You

Your role will vary day to day, but you will:

* Providing excellent service to our customers.
* Handle general customer queries via the telephone, Live chat or email within agreed service standards.
* Underwrite new business, renewals and mid-term adjustments.
* Take referrals from other underwriters where appropriate and within own authority level.
* Negotiate within authority, referring where appropriate to maximize customer retention.
* Anticipate likely objections and build effective responses.
* To collaborate strongly with other departments to achieve the Company's goals in respect of service delivery .

Essential Skills

We don't expect you to know everything from day one, but the following will enable you to hit the ground running:

* Confident handling, analysing and interpreting data.
* Evidence of personal and professional development and commitment to further development.
* Passionate about your own development.
* Good numerical, written and verbal communication (including telephony) skills are essential.
* You must enjoy interacting with others, building strong internal and external relationships and have excellent communication skills.
* Practical knowledge of MS Office and MS Outlook
* Arrange and attend face to face meetings with our brokers to discuss cases and negotiate terms

Desirable Experience

* An understanding of the commercial insurance market.
* Responsible Artificial Intelligence usage with experience using Generative AI tools such as onsite Webchat / Chat Bot systems is desirable but not essential.
