The Role of an SEN Teaching Assistant in Newport
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will support primary-aged pupils within specialist ALN provisions and mainstream school settings. You will help learners overcome barriers to education, develop social and communication skills, and build confidence both inside and outside the classroom.
Working closely with teachers and support staff, you will play a key role in creating a positive, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment where every pupil can thrive.

SEN Teaching Assistant Responsibilities
You may support pupils with a variety of additional learning needs and special educational needs, including:
15. MLD – Moderate Learning Difficulties
16. SLD – Severe Learning Difficulties
17. ASC – Autism Spectrum Condition
18. SEMH – Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs
As part of the role, you will:
19. Provide one-to-one support and small group interventions
20. Assist with classroom learning activities and daily routines
21. Adapt resources to meet individual pupil requirements
22. Support pupils with communication, emotional regulation, and behaviour
23. Encourage independence, confidence, and participation in learning
24. Build strong relationships with pupils, families, and school staff
25. Work collaboratively within both specialist and mainstream learning environments
