Job Description
Principal Highways Drainage Engineer, based in Manchester, Newcastle, Chesterfield and St Albans, responsible for design and delivery of highway drainage systems for transportation projects.

Here’s what you’ll do
* Anticipate: Understand drainage delivery requirements and solve routine and advanced problems.
* Deliver: Provide full lifecycle delivery of projects, including feasibility, concept, preliminary and detailed design, community engagement, project delivery and construction management services.
* Oversee: Manage appointment of competent drainage engineers, plan and develop engineering tasks, define scope and develop novel concepts.
* Provide Expertise: Offer technical drainage knowledge across multi‑disciplinary projects from concept to implementation.
* Ensure Quality: Maintain client standards, lead health, safety and wellness initiatives, prepare feasibility, preliminary and detailed drainage designs, and conduct detailed technical reports.
* Collaborate: Lead a multidisciplinary engineering team, build relationships with technical teams and clients.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver engineering designs meeting quality standards, budgets and timescales.
* Undertake health & safety duties, including safety in design and CDM.
* Design highway drainage systems per UK standards, DMRB and MCHW.
* Use drainage modelling software and manual techniques where appropriate.
* Construct 3D models in a BIM environment.
* Perform design checks on drainage designs completed by others.
* Collaborate with colleagues and clients using Business Collaborator and ProjectWise.
* Identify required data and advise team leader.
* Supervise and mentor junior members.
* Prepare technical reports.
* Monitor hours against project budget.
* Encourage knowledge sharing, innovation and creativity.
* Complete required health and safety training and CSCS qualification where required.
* Build relationships with internal teams across AECOM’s business lines.
* Support marketing and business development objectives.
Qualifications
* Degree in Civil Engineering.
* Chartered or Incorporated Engineer required to sign off drainage designs for NH CG502.
* Minimum 5 years post‑graduation experience in highway drainage design in the UK.
* Proficiency with highway drainage design software.
* Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety and CDM.
* Comprehensive knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges drainage standards.
