Job overview

Opportunity to work in a new facility where you will enhance specialist skills in Neuroscience. The team has been awarded Clinical Team of the Year 2024. Services are co‑located in the Louisa Martindale Building.

We are currently seeking highly motivated individuals to support the Neurosciences Service including Recovery, Scrub, Anaesthetics and the delivery of Polytrauma Service at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Experience in an acute setting is desirable; training will be provided. Applications are also accepted from nurse/ODP students in their final year of training in the UK.


Main duties of the job

* Provide clinical support & teaching to all relevant personnel within the specialist area.
* Provide information & support to patients having anaesthesia / surgery.
* Assist with the development of safe & high‑quality specialist patient care & work within the Trust Nursing & Midwifery Strategy.

This vacancy is suitable for qualified Operating Department Practitioners or Nurses who hold a valid HCPC/NMC registration. Students in their final year of training are encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates will work an internal rotation shift pattern to provide 24/7 cover for the Neurosurgery and Polytrauma Service at Brighton and will participate in the on‑call rota.

* Complete an orientation period to the clinical area in line with the Trust’s induction programme.
* Support ongoing professional development.


Responsibilities – Management / Organisational

* Ensure accurate records and information systems are maintained.
* Safely control, custody and administer all drugs within the peri‑operative area in line with Trust Policies and national legislation.
* Assist the Team Leader to ensure patient care reflects departmental philosophy.
* Respect customs, values, spiritual beliefs and promote equal opportunities.
* Inform Team Leader / Clinical Theatre Manager of changes in circumstance affecting safe practice.
* Support the Team Leader in developing specialist areas within pre‑ and post‑operative services.
* Ensure mandatory training for self and others is attended.
* Demonstrate IT and keyboard skills for electronic data collection and communication.
* Communicate effectively with all disciplines, patients, clients and relatives.
* Complete incident records and report to the manager.
* Manage the team under pressure and in stressful emergencies.
* Maintain security of the working area.
* Provide a safe working environment in line with health and safety legislation.
* Attend routine departmental meetings.
* Maintain stock levels of consumables and order equipment as delegated.
* Ensure efficient utilisation of theatre session time, start lists promptly and minimise delays.
* Manage safe and efficient running of Neuro Theatre lists in the absence of senior staff.


Responsibilities – Clinical

* Participate in setting, monitoring and evaluating standards of care.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care using specialist peri‑operative care plans.
* Provide specialist, technical and clinical information to patients and colleagues.
* Apply effective interpersonal, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills in complex situations.
* Demonstrate awareness of trends in pre‑ and post‑operative practice.
* Show specialist knowledge backed by theoretical and practical experience.
* Manage unpredictable workload and deal with traumatic/emotional situations.
* Maintain high standard of skills in pre‑operative and post‑operative areas.
* Ensure multidisciplinary team documentation and utilisation of the peri‑operative care pathway.
* Apply manual handling policies and procedures.
* Adhere to infection control guidelines and maintain a clean environment.
* Update knowledge of maintenance and checking procedures for specialist equipment.


Person specification – Qualifications

* NMC/HCPC Registration.
* RGN Anaesthetic qualification (if practising Anaesthetics) or Diploma in Operating Department Practice.


Person specification – Knowledge and Experience

* Interest in pre‑ and post‑operative practice and willingness to develop skills in all areas of peri‑operative care.
* Effective organising of self and others.
* Experience in fast‑paced neurosurgical theatre environment.
* Experience in critical care/peri‑operative setting.
* Experience in Anaesthetic, Scrubs, Recovery, HDU or Neurosurgery.
