The University of London

The University of London is the UK’s largest provider of international distance and online learning and the convenor of a federation of 17 London-based universities, many of which are among the highest-ranking universities in the world.

Collectively the federation represents a cohort of some 250,000 learners and 50,000 academic and professional services staff. Within this cohort are around 40,000 University of London students who study programmes which are developed and delivered in partnership with our 17 federation members.

The University of London is also home to the School of Advanced Study, the national centre for the humanities and a champion for the arts and humanities.

Although proudly rooted in London, our community and impact are global.

Our passion for increasing access to education and mobilising the collective power and expertise of the federation is central to our ability to transform lives around the world and address the global challenges of the future.

The Role

Lecturer in Classical Studies (Research, Training and Partnerships)

The Institute of Classical Studies is the UK’s national centre for the promotion and facilitation of research in Classics and related disciplines. Along with seven other discipline-specific research institutes and specialist hubs for Digital Humanities and Public Engagement, it forms part of the School of Advanced Study.

As the only institution that is nationally funded to promote and facilitate research in the humanities, the School of Advanced Study performs a vital role as a driving force for knowledge sharing across the humanities in the UK and beyond. It receives special funding for this purpose.

The Institute of Classical Studies is now recruiting for an open-ended lectureship in Classical Studies in support of its national mission. The postholder will be an active researcher with a PhD in Classical Studies or a related discipline. They will be supported to develop their own research agenda but will also be responsible for developing and extending the ICS’s existing researcher training programme, working with key partners in the School, such as the Doctoral Centre. They will be expected to develop national and international collaborations with appropriate external partners, including UK classical departments, other institutions such as the British Institutional Research Institutes and the GLAM sector.

The postholder will be located in the Institute of Classical Studies and will report to the ICS Director. The post will offer opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement and networking across the School of Advanced Study’s eight institutes and two specialist hubs. The postholder will also work with and be supported by the School of Advanced Study’s Doctoral Centre. As a member of academic staff in a world-leading centre for the promotion and facilitation of research in the humanities, the postholder will have access to an unparalleled network of collaborations and opportunities for professional development. Mentoring will be offered, along with support for achieving Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (if the successful candidate does not already hold such fellowship). Further professional training is available through the University of London Learning and Development.

If you would like a confidential conversation about this opportunity before applying, please contact Dr Kathryn Tempest, Acting Director of the Institute of Classical Studies (kathryn.tempest@sas.ac.uk).

To apply, please submit your application (by clicking ‘apply for job’ at the bottom of this page) before the closing date at midnight on Thursday 15 January 2026. To be considered for shortlisting, your application must include a full CV and a covering letter. The covering letter should address why you are interested in this role, give examples of your relevant skills and experience in relation to the advertised job description and person specification, and provide a clear vision of what you would bring to the role and to the ICS.

Interviews will be held on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 February 2026.

Preferential consideration will be given to the University redeployment pool.

The University currently operates a Hybrid Working framework involving a mix of working remotely and in the office. Typically, most employees will be able to agree to work remotely for up to 60% of their working week, role dependent. However, they will be required to attend on specific days for training or team meetings. It is an expectation within the School of Advanced Study that colleagues in student-facing roles work from the office for a minimum of three days a week during termtime.

The University of London is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive working environment where we can all be ourselves and succeed. We particularly encourage applications from members of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities as this group is currently under-represented at all levels within the University. All appointments will be made on merit, based on the criteria identified in the job description.

Pursuing excellence in education and equal opportunities.
