Overview
Senior Manager, Credit Risk Strategy at GoCardless. GoCardless is a global bank payment company serving 100,000+ businesses with direct debit, real-time payments and open banking. The role focuses on designing, executing and evolving GoCardless’s credit risk strategy, accountable for credit loss outcomes across the business and ensuring robust, scalable policies and frameworks. This role does not manage day-to-day underwriting; underwriting work sits with the Credit Underwriting team in Shared Services. You will work with Product, Operations, and commercial teams to ensure policies and frameworks are robust and commercially aligned.
Location: Leeds, United Kingdom (remote/hybrid options per team).
Responsibilities
* Own the enterprise credit risk strategy for GoCardless, aligning with business objectives and risk appetite.
* Set strategic direction for managing and mitigating credit losses across geographies, products and customer segments.
* Define and maintain credit risk appetite and tolerance levels; track performance against them.
* Act as the lead credit stakeholder in new product development and market expansion initiatives.
* Collaborate with Product, Legal and Engineering to define risk-mitigating product features (e.g. reserve models, caps, loss provisioning).
* Ensure credit exposure is scoped and managed in early-stage designs.
* Develop strategic frameworks for managing credit risk across the customer base, tailored to SMBs and enterprise merchants.
* Analyze trends in portfolio performance and develop recommendations to reduce loss exposure.
* Work with cross-functional teams to implement interventions (policy changes, automation, product levers).
* Partner with the Credit Underwriting team to align credit policy, execution and performance outcomes.
* Collaborate with Finance, Legal, Product, Engineering and Commercial teams to embed credit risk into key decisions and systems.
* Influence and educate senior stakeholders on credit risk considerations and trade-offs.
* Engage in cross-functional leadership, influencing at senior levels in a matrixed organisation.
Qualifications & Attributes
* Significant experience in credit risk strategy, preferably in payments, fintech, or financial services.
* Strong understanding of credit exposure in B2B environments.
* Strategic thinking with ability to interpret complex risk signals into clear, scalable approaches.
* Proven ability to partner with operational teams to drive outcomes (underwriting experience relevant).
* Comfortable working cross-functionally and influencing at senior levels.
* Data-savvy with experience using risk, finance or performance metrics to inform decisions.
* SQL skills preferred but not required.
* Experience managing a small but high-impact team (analysts).
