East Lothian Community Hospital
NHS LOTHIAN
CLINICAL FELLOW IN GENERAL MEDICINE AND NEUROPSYCHIATRY
EAST LOTHIAN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
NHS Lothian is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.
To this end, NHS Lothian welcomes applications from all sections of society.
We will fully support disabled candidates, and candidates with long-term conditions or who are neurodivergent by making reasonable adjustments to our recruitment policy and practices.
Applications are welcome for the above fixed term (12 months), full time (40 hours per week) post based in East Lothian Community Hospital.
Post Summary:
This post, initially appointed on a 12 month basis, will be largely based at the Scottish Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation Service (Robert Fergusson Unit, RFU), a national specialist service for in-patient rehabilitation of patients with complex neuropsychiatric disorders after acquired brain injury. It also provides, on an occasional basis, in-patient treatment for other complex neuropsychiatric disorders. The post holder will join consultant neuropsychiatrists Killian Welch and Ally Rooney.
The RFU has 18 beds with a multidisciplinary staff group including 68 nursing & assistant nursing staff, 1.5 occupational therapists, 1.5 speech and language therapists, 1 physiotherapist, 0.5 art/music therapists, 0.2 dieticians and 2 secretaries. The unit specialises in the integration of medical treatment with complex behavioural therapies, interventions being tailored to patients often severe cognitive impairments.
The RFU works closely with the Scottish Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service (SBRS) at East Lothian Community Hospital. Depending on experience, the appointee may also provide input into the Astley Ainslie Hospital and its associated community neurorehabilitation team. Our links with SBRH (and with the Dept of Clinical Neurosciences at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh) provide an excellent opportunity for a unique and comprehensive experience of neurorehabilitation, particularly in relation to acute brain injury. We would also support the post-holder in obtaining wider experience of medical care and meeting CPD requirements in general medical care.
Given the highly specialised nature of this post, it is appreciated that the successful candidate may have had limited exposure to neuropsychiatry/neurobehavioural rehabilitation at the time of appointment. Depending on experience, in the initial phase of employment the successful candidate will likely require a degree of supervision and sub-speciality training. Working in a tertiary referral centre does however mean that there is much opportunity to develop a unique set of skills. In time it would be expected they would work with increasing independence, developing their own clinical, service development and potentially research interests.
Apart from out-of-hours and emergency cover the unit does not have junior medical staff: all care is provided by senior clinicians. The appointee will be expected to take lead responsibility for the day-to-day medical care of RFU patients, albeit with input/support from consultant colleagues.
The post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will not be recognised for training.
