Job Summary
Pharmacy Technician – Join our forward‑thinking medicines optimisation pharmacy service as a registered or soon to be registered Pharmacy Technician. We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed team player with excellent time management, interpersonal and organisational skills. You should be able to work under pressure, have strong attention to detail and be an excellent communicator.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide a ward pharmacy service to allocated units external to hospital sites.
* Provide technical support to mental health pharmacy services – checking patients' own medication on admission, dispensing and supplying medication to specific patients.
* Coordinate and manage the day‑to‑day workload in the dispensary, providing line management support for allocated staff.
* Accuracy‑check completed prescriptions and maintain technical competency.
* Maintain competencies that enable working across the trust.
* Support clinical teams with the supply, storage and management of medicines within inpatient areas.
* Complete medicines history/reconciliation when patients are admitted.
* Provide information to patients and carers about their medicines, supporting adherence and understanding.
* Work closely with clinical teams to plan and support timely leave and discharge, utilising near‑patient dispensing processes.
* Support transfer of care into primary care, utilising the DMS service and liaising with other healthcare professionals.
* Participate in the accuracy‑checking rota within the dispensary.
* Support the training and development of trainees.
* Participate in weekend and bank‑holiday rota.

Required Experience and Training
Essential:
* Demonstrable experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
* Experience working in a hospital pharmacy.
* Nationally recognised accuracy‑checking qualification or ability to demonstrate competency at this level.
* Accredited Checking Technician status.
* NVQ Level 3, BTEC or similar nationally recognised qualification in pharmaceutical sciences.
* UK Professional registration as a Pharmacy Technician.
Desirable:
* Accuracy‑checking experience.
* Hospital pharmacy experience.
* Experience setting up ward‑based pharmacy services.
* Provision of medicines management to new services and linking with community pharmacies.
* Discharge planning experience.
* Self‑administration of medicines.
* Specific experience working in a mental health environment.
* NVQ A1 assessor qualification.
* Medicines management training.
* Team leading training.
Person Specification – Knowledge & Skills
Essentials:
* Supervisory skills.
* Pharmaceutical waste management.
* Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
* Regulations on controlled drugs in primary and secondary care.
* Understanding of mental health issues and their treatment.
* Good communication skills, oral and written.
* Good time management and organisational skills.

Desirable:
* Experience with hospital computer systems (JAC).
* Knowledge and experience of checking dispensed prescriptions.
