We have a strong nursing leadership team, a dedicated Paediatric Lead Nurse and two dedicated and innovative practice development nurses to guide and support you in conjunction with an allocated mentor.
Within 2 years of joining the Trust you will be offered the following courses:
PILS (Paediatric immediate life support)
TILS (Trauma immediate life support)
Qualification in Specialism for Paediatric Emergency Nursing, which is accredited by the RCN.
Manchester Triage training
These training opportunities and more offer the ideal stepping stone to a junior sister role –we are keen to develop and support nursing growth.
Post registration acute nursing experience is desirable for this role.
Main duties of the job
The Whittington Emergency Department (ED) serves the diverse local community of North London. Our CQC inspection in January 2020 praised the teamwork displayed amongst our staff who support each other to provide good care.
We provide high quality emergency care and maintain an above average performance. We are a dedicated trauma unit as part of the North East London and Essex Trauma Network.
In the Paediatric Emergency Department, you will work a combination of long days (07:30–20:00), night shifts (19:30–08:00), and twilight shifts (10:00–22:30).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Main Duties
1. Assess, plan and implement care for children on arrival to the treatment area and prioritise need for clinical intervention after the appropriate training.
2. Develop an area of clinical interest to improve the care & services offered to children and their families.
3. Maintain effective communication with colleagues and patients and their families, assessing and supporting children and their families with understanding of their illness, health promotion and prevention of future illness.
4. Ensure the safe administration of medicines in accordance with local policy and NMC guidelines, including Patient Group Directions.
5. Provide support for children/young people and their families. Direct them to relevant services if appropriate.
6. Ensure high standards of patient care at all times.
7. Ensure an appropriate, welcoming and safe environment is provided for children and their families. As much as possible, this should be audio-visually separate from adults and in line with National Service Framework recommendations.
8. Develop and keep clinical knowledge and skills updated, including developing and maintaining extended clinical role skills, following appropriate training.
9. Assist in the identification of any child protection issues and make referrals to appropriate multidisciplinary team members including social services.
10. Participate and maintain effective communication of information and data between team members, patients and family networks and offer appropriate support and advice.
11. Organise your own work, working within your own scope of practice and recognising limitations and need for further training/development.

13. Inform and escalate to the Shift leader / Lead Nurse of any activity in the department which affects patient care.
14. Maintain an awareness of clinical and professional developments in nursing and contribute to and participate in audits, clinical risk and quality initiatives.
15. Take an active role in the induction, orientation and preceptorship of new staff.
16. Report accidents/incidents and complaints to the paediatric lead nurse, or in his/her absence, the shift leader. Complete relevant documentation.
17. Work at all times as part of the team, liaising closely with senior colleagues, and respond positively to feedback from preceptors/colleagues.
18. Assist in the management of resources in an effective and efficient manner and have an awareness of cost implications.
19. Assist in maintaining the correct environment for teaching student nurses/other learners and be aware of their educational requirements.
20. Act as mentor for learners and attend all mandatory study days.
21. Assist with on-going education of families in healthcare issues, including health promotion.
22. Supervise and support junior staff and students in the care of children.
23. Identify own learning needs and ensure own professional development. To participate in appraisal, staff development and training activities.
24. Maintain high standards of professional behaviour at all times and contribute to the high standards of care delivered within the Emergency Department.
25. Exercise professional accountability as instructed by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and work in accordance with trust policies and procedures

27. Maintain contemporaneous, accurate documentation in line with NMC and Trust guidelines.
28. Understand local audits, clinical governance and the health and safety requirements of the Emergency Department.
