Job Title:

Senior Editor

Location:

Employment Type:

Full-Time

About Ocula:

Ocula is a leading online contemporary art platform that connects collectors, galleries and institutions. Through its flagship publication, Ocula magazine, we publish in-depth interviews, critical essays and timely analysis on the artists, exhibitions and ideas driving the global art world. With a global focus, a strong Asia Pacific presence and an expanding international readership, Ocula magazine is a respected voice in contemporary art discourse.

Now based in London following over a decade in Hong Kong and New Zealand, Ocula magazine is relaunching with a new editorial team. We are a destination for intelligent, original storytelling and genuine commentary on the art world, offering human angles on stories that surprise readers and get them talking. As a digital-first publication, we bring fast-paced creativity to the art media landscape. We offer a comprehensive insight into the forces shaping the business and politics of art, from inside and out.

The Role:

Ocula is seeking a Senior Editor as its magazine relaunches under a new Editor-in-Chief. The successful candidate will have experience as an editor on a magazine or newspaper, with an emphasis on visual arts and culture, and a strong understanding of the international art world. This individual will be an imaginative commissioner and an efficient editor with sound judgement, a confident writer, and have an eye for visual storytelling. Experience in digital-first journalism is a plus, and the ability to balance forward planning with timely, news reactive features is essential.

The Senior Editor will be excited by new ways of telling stories about contemporary art and culture that speak not only to curators, collectors and artists but a wider audience, including those who might not consider themselves interested in visual art at all. They will be expected to create and contribute to editorial series and content pillars, continuously expanding the magazine's reach and impact in line with evolving disciplines and digital media, including podcasts and videos.

This role will suit an individual looking to take the next step in their career, joining a small and ambitious team at a pivotal moment of change. They will play a key role in shaping the editorial vision of Ocula magazine for the future.

Key Responsibilities:

* Plan, commission and edit global features, interviews and columns from staff writers and freelance contributors, with a focus on nurturing new writers
* Write regular articles, including exhibition previews, artist profiles and quick turnaround columns
* Introduce new ideas for content formats and push the boundaries beyond what the art world is currently contributing to digital media
* Stay attuned to major developments, voices and movements in the art world across regions, especially in Asia Pacific, Europe and North America
* Work closely with the Social Media Editor to optimise the reach of articles from the point of commissioning
* Coordinate with the Managing Editor to ensure the smooth running of all editorial workflows
* Manage editorial assistant and internship roles, providing guidance and fostering a creative and collaborative work environment
* Contribute to Ocula's newsletter, selecting highlights and writing custom text as required
* Serve as an assistant producer for video and podcast episodes on occasion

Skills Required:

* Experience commissioning and editing timely and imaginative stories, including in a digital-first environment
* Exceptional writing skills, with a sharp eye for narrative structure and critical insight
* In-depth knowledge of the international contemporary art world, supported by a network of contacts
* Interest in how visual culture connects to economics, politics and the world we live in
* Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, SEO best practices and newsletter strategy
* Ability to work collaboratively and with agility in a fast-paced environment
* Some experience on the production of audiovisual formats, such as podcast and video
* Confidence chairing live panel events in front of an audience or camera
* Capacity to balance critical integrity with the strategic goals of a commercial platform
* A global mindset, with sensitivity to diverse cultures, audiences and contexts

How we work:

* Unparalleled exposure to the contemporary art market
* Flexible working environment
* Opportunity to work with a fun, passionate and collaborative team helping to shape the future of an exciting and creative industry that we love
