Health Visitor, Specialist Community Public Health Nurse – 0-19 Service for the London Borough of Harrow.
The service provides Health Visiting and School Nursing to the children and families of Harrow's 261,200 residents in North West London. The role supports the Healthy Child Programme and aims to achieve equity of health outcomes through evidence‑based services.
Main Responsibilities
* Identify and assess child and family health needs and deliver universal core services, targeted interventions and public health interventions within a defined locality.
* Work closely with local partners such as GPs, Children’s Centres and community volunteers.
* Serve as an effective role model and supervise community nursery nurses, community staff nurses, health care assistants and students.
* Contribute to the Maternal Early Childhood Sustained Home-visiting (MECSH) programme, a high‑quality structured intervention for families requiring ongoing support.
* Use clinical judgement and risk assessment to keep service users safe.
* Safeguard people, recognise and respond to risk of abuse, and, when necessary, seek help and raise concerns.
* Act as an advocate for service users and be open and transparent about practice.
* Maintain accurate, legible and comprehensive records; comply with mandatory training requirements.
* Support a culture of continuous improvement and reflect on practice to identify safety or quality improvements.
Person Specification – Essential Criteria
* Excellent communication with multi‑disciplinary team; present cases, take action notes, update team and use handover effectively.
* Maintain accurate, timely, concise and legible clinical records electronically and in writing, compliant with CNWL policies.
* Discuss sensitive issues with confidence and challenge others assertively when needed.
* Use Microsoft Word and Excel for letters and reports; maintain electronic patient records.
* Act as a professional, registered nurse in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct.
* Work well with team members – communicative, kind, reliable and enthusiastic.
* Manage others and contribute to team management.
Person Specification – Desirable Criteria
* Expertise in specific skills with evidence of development and application.
* Supervision, line management and appraisal training.
* HR skills training, e.g., recruitment and managing absence.
Qualifications – Essential Criteria
* Current UK NMC Registered Nurse or Midwife.
* UK Registered Specialist Practitioner Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor).
* Evidence of relevant continuous professional development.
* Numeracy skills for safe administration of medicines.
Qualifications – Desirable Criteria
* Mentorship Preparation Module / ENB 998.
* Degree or Master’s in a related subject.
* Nurse Prescribing competency.
Previous Experience – Essential Criteria
* Open to newly qualified health visitors.
* Experience working with complex families.
* Experience in multi‑disciplinary integrated team working.
* Ability to work flexibly and respond to changing demands both individually and within a team.
* Ability to work independently and proactively seek support when needed.
* Knowledge of infection control legislation and standards.
* Knowledge of safeguarding children issues.
