This video gives a flavour of what it is like to work at our Trust and why some of our staff love working here 💙

Are you looking for a role that offers both challenge and reward, with the opportunity to make a real impact at the heart of patient care—while working nights?

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Blood Sciences at the King Georges Hospital Goodmayes (KGH) for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist (BMS) with experience in Haematology to join our dedicated night shift team.

Why join us?

* Work as part of a close-knit, supportive team providing essential services throughout the night when your skills are most needed.
* Play a vital role in delivering high‑quality diagnostics to support emergency and specialist services.
* Contribute to one of the busiest Blood Sciences services in the region, with 26 million diagnostic tests provided annually across the Trust and primary care.
* Benefit from a minimum of 10 dedicated training days per year to support your ongoing professional development and career progression.

As a Specialist BMS, you will:

* Deliver an efficient and effective Haematology and Blood Transfusion service during the night shift.
* Work autonomously while still being part of a highly skilled and approachable team.
* Take on responsibilities that will develop your leadership and organisational skills, with opportunities to supervise sections of the laboratory.

Main duties of the job

· To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations in accordance with standard operating procedures, including preparation of reagents where required.

· To undertake preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment. In the event of equipment failure, to investigate and correct or seek advice from senior staff or service engineer. To maintain a record in accordance with protocol .

· To check the accuracy and precision of manual and automated laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures and take appropriate action if a problem is identified.

· To report any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure.

· To maintain up to date knowledge and skills in haematology, blood transfusion and immunology to support best practice and maintain a portfolio to demonstrate this.

· To keep the workplace and work benches clean and tidy.

· To maintain good work relations with all members of staff, and to plan and organise their own work within the demands of the team.

· To treat everyone associated with BHR Hospital NHS Trust with courtesy and respect.

We operate a 24/7 service on both sites. The bloodsciences department is ready to move to a full shift system and participation is essential.
Both hospitals offer a pleasant working environment and are well served by several bus routes and mainline stations nearby.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.
We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.
Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.
These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.
The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries – live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
