Mediplacements are looking to recruit a Band 5 Mortuary Technician for a locum position with our client in Somerset. The pay for this position is £18-£20 per hour, and we are looking for someone who can start as soon as possible for an ongoing duration. JOB SUMMARY: To participate in the day to day running of the mortuary under the direction of the Chief APT, in accordance with the approved methods and quality assurance protocols. Deputising for the Chief APT as and when necessary. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1) To record the admission of bodies from the hospital wards, A&E and the community. Checking ID bands and identity of the deceased. Checking for pacemakers, and property, valuables and accurately recording the information on the Pathology LIMS system. 2) Release bodies from the mortuary into the care of approved undertakers with all property and necessary paperwork in accordance with local protocol. Checking the ID of the deceased, print the correct release form. Check the deceased property, valuables. 3) Use of the electro-hydraulic mortuary trolley hoist and cold storage system. 4) Use the pathology LIMS system to sign out the deceased, checking the details. Sign the release forms and obtain the undertakers signature as their record of receipt. To ensure that all bodies leave with all property and paperwork in a timely manner 5) Ensure timely release of organs and babies/foetuses to undertakers with completion of necessary paperwork. Involved in the checking of details of foetal containers and the relevant paperwork. Signing out each case individually when the coffin is signed over to the undertakers. 6) On release of post mortem organs and slides and blocks. Check the HTA paperwork and material is correct with the HTA co-ordinator. 7) Participation in both routine and advanced post-mortem techniques including removal of tissues, organs and implanted devices as directed by the Chief Technical Officer and Consultant Pathologists, reconstruction of bodies to a good aesthetic standard. 8) Carrying out surgical evisceration, diagnostic and patient reconstruction processes in the post mortem room suite in accordance with mortuary policies. Carry out all relevant post mortem procedures on patients which are in an advanced state of mechanical disruption or decomposition. 9) Record interpretation of abnormal findings during post mortem examinations reporting them to senior mortuary staff and pathologist as appropriate. 10) Carry out decontamination and sterilisation procedures of the post mortem suite, all instruments, equipment, ventilated tables, autopsy tables and hard surfaces. 11) Conversant with legal documentation required for the reception, post mortem, release and disposal of bodies, personal effects and tissue retention. 12) Carry out pacemaker removal. 13) Organise timely despatch and receipt of organs and bodies, bloods for toxicology, to/from specialist centres with necessary paperwork. Ensuring specimens are labelled and handled in accordance with pathology policies. 14) To ensure access to bodies for viewing by medical staff. 15) To maintain high standards of presentation of bodies for viewing. 16) Book and arrange viewings liaising with the Bereavement Office. 17) Arrange official identification on behalf of the HM Coroner and the Police. 18) To work within accepted rules and procedures of mortuary practice complying with the HTA standards, keeping up to date with current legislation with regard to mortuary practice, post mortem procedures and organ retention. 19) Implements, reviews and proposes changes to departmental standard operating procedures. 20) Take part in clinical and quality audit. Including updating documents, CAPAs, risk assessments and equipment tasks as part of the quality management system. 21) To assist in the training and supervision of APT staff and students as directed by the Chief APT. 22) To comply with Health & Safety regulations of the department, with particular reference to safe working practices in the post mortem room. 23) To plan and organise work priorities, including training.
