Offer description

Overview

The Environment Agency is fully committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all vacancies. Join us in a diverse environment where every voice is heard and valued.

Do you want to effectively regulate the energy sectors to create a better place? The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sectors, which are responsible for 24% of UK greenhouse gas emissions. They must fully decarbonise by 2050 while doubling electricity production. This context creates pressures to transition to sustainable power, maximise domestic energy sources, and address energy security concerns. Through effective regulation, we must ensure that energy sectors protect people and the environment from emissions and mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts.

We’re recruiting a fixed-term role, up to 2 years, for someone with experience of working in or regulating energy sectors, including various scales of combustion plant, waste incineration and refineries. (Further information in additional information document.)

Responsibilities

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training.
* Develop strategy for our sectors and produce tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects where needed.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players.
* Respond to incidents as a central part of our work, and be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

Our technical experts lead on the definition of standards for our sectors, providing strategic direction, tools to support regulation of the energy sectors, guidance and training to deliver new duties, and environmental best practice.

Experience / skills Required

* Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, and experience of the work area for the role, gained by working within and/or regulating relevant processes. This includes knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.
